  • Double air dam (updated)

Well, my old air dam is getting scraped up enough to warrant replacement, so the new on from GMPartsdirect.com is here.

What I plan to do is double up the air dam (mount both) to add some stiffness. They're flexible enough that it seems they'd bend back a bit at highway speed, reducing the potential cooling air flow and ram air effect from the FTRA.

I don't expect a SOTP difference from the FTRA, but if it helps keep the car cooler and kick the a/c a little more (both good things in Tucson), I'll be happy.

Screws look long enough to use the old ones too, always nice (though I live 100 yards from Ace Hardware if they're too short)

Note that they'll be held together at the top only, so we're looking at doubling the stiffness, as the bottoms can flex past each other like a leaf spring. If I wanted real stiffness, I'd throw a couple screws through the pair along the bottom edge, which would give a stiffness increase of 8x. Don't know if I want to bump it going over a speed bump secured like that, though.

I'll update if I notice anything special.

    -Jeff

    UPDATE:
A/C definately cooled off more than before when moving, at highway speeds I had the fan a notch lower than usual and the car was nice and cool.

Scraped it once (kind of on purpose -ouch- and things are fine underneath, both dams flexed as intended.

Neat idea but if you hit a curb it might break instead of bend.

The plastic is very flexible - almost a vinyl instead of the more rigid ABS type parts. Since for now I'm only going to use the original top holes, when I hit something they'll both flex and be able to slide against each other at the bottom, each acting as if was the only dam.

Almost ready to throw them on, just heading over to Ace to get some longer bolts (the originals work in all spots but the 3 with the FTRA in there.

15 minutes to take them off, about 15 mins of dremel/knife work to get them to nest well, then back on again. I took a pic with the digicam, but it's pretty obvious where to cut for anyone wanting to do this.

I think one air dam is good enough, but nothing wrong with experimenting. Just hope that it doesn't break on you at the wrong time, like it usually does with our cars.
