for the second time my egr valve has set off the service engine soon light. What the hell does the EGR valve do and how much would it cost to get it replaced? Thanks

egr controls combustion temperatures for 2 reasons: 1: to prevent the formaton of NOx, an emission pollutant that is a component in smog. and 2: to prevent detonation ("spark knock").
you need to carefully diagnose egr circuit before simply throwing a part at it. get a haynes manual and read up on it. for $20 it's a pretty informative guide that all fbody owners should have.
btw, which code are you getting? that will help possibly in giving you diagnostic ideas...ASE Master, L1, X1, C1. Instructor in automotive systems. 99 3800 4L60E with a few mods and a greatful dead sticker on the back window.

I got P-1441 on my 1996, my book said it was a evap problem. my ses light has been on for three months with the same code. dont know really how to fix it. i think someone on here took there car to the dealer to fix this code and it took like four tries for them to fix it. Im lost too.<a href=\"http://www.geocities.com/atg284\" target=\"_blank\">http://www.geocities.com/atg284</a> <br /><br />1996 Black RS<br />3.8L --V6 -- A4<br />y87 performance package--flowmaster--SLP CAI--fan switch--3.42 gears--nos 5175 <br /><a href=\"http://camaroz28.cardomain.com/id/theforgottenfbod\" target=\"_blank\">http://camaroz28.cardomain.com/id/theforgottenfbod</a>

Jim, FWIW I completley removed my EGR. I throw codes because of it though. I blocked off both holes on the header and on the intake manifold.Keith - Chicago<br /><a href=\"http://www.hptuners.com\" target=\"_blank\">HP Tuners - PCM Reprogramming</a><br /><a href=\"http://www.dxsoftware.com/magnus/\" target=\"_blank\">97 Firebird V6 to LS1 swap</a><br /><b>V8 9.967@132.78</b> 1.322 60\' NA Heads/Cam<br /><b>V8 10.295@128.48</b> 1.363 60\' NA Cam Only<br /><b>V8 10.987@119.31</b> 1.422 60\' NA Stock Internals<br /><b>V6 13.674@98.22</b> NA<br /><b>V6 12.394@104.91</b> N20 100HP

try removing the EGR valve, and running some throttle body cleaner through it. Then clean the two pipes that come from the EGR valve. Sometimes carbon can build up in the valve causing the pintle to stay open or closed. You'll probably have to replace the EGR gasket after removing it, but it's much cheaper than the actual valve. P1441 is evap system flow during non-purge. this means that the pcm is sensing that your evap canister is feeding fuel vapor to the intake manifold when it is not supposed to. this can cause things like surging idle, etc, that may appear to be egr problems....
are you sure you're getting 1441 code? EGR codes would be P0401-P0405 or P1404. check to make sure the code you gave is accurate before proceeding with further diag.
also... i wouldn't recommend removing egr valve. it reduces NOx emissions and is also used to control detonation by reducing combustion temps. besides, removing the egr valve is still not going to solve the problem you're having.
check on code to make sure and let me know.ASE Master, L1, X1, C1. Instructor in automotive systems. 99 3800 4L60E with a few mods and a greatful dead sticker on the back window.

I got the same thing. My light was on but I also had a leak. I thought it was an exhaust manifold leak because all of a sudden something blew and it started ticking. It ended up being my EGR seal and i got it fixed for $50. I wasn't about to do it myself. I got alot of power back after that too. I was worth it.
