  • Is a deeper sound possible?

Last May I got a 40 series flowmaster put on my 1995 3.4. It has a deep sound at lower RPMs but when I get between 3-4k RPMs it has a "rice" sound. Is there anything I can do to stop it from having that annoying sound? Will a high flow cat do it? if so, do I need 2 cats since my car has 2 on it now. Also, I only changed the muffler, not the pipes. Could changing the pipes help also? Thanks in advance.

No, a highflow cat actually makes it somewhat worse. From what I've gathered, Flowmaster American Thunder gets rid of a lot of the raspy sound on the 3.8, so it might work for the 3.4. I've also heard of people putting resonators in place of the cat which gets rid of the ricey sound.

or you could add two more cylinders. That should help get rid of the ricey sound. :D

My dynomax bullet muffler acts as a resonator...plus the 3.8 Flowmaster catback has a resonator on the I pipe, so I have 2 resonators and no cat. Makes it loud and great sounding.

Supposedly flowmaster is making a kit now specifically for the 3.4, and it's supposed to sound nice and deep all the way throught the RPM range. Look into that...

Dont headers get rid of the rasp too? I know those add a deeper sound at least.

Fierdon- Are you sure you have two cats? I thought 2cats=true dual exhaust. I could be wrong..but i never saw a 3.4 with true dual?

No, some firebirds have two cats. Oe right after another. Also, where can I find a resonator for my car online?
