OMG hahahaha. This maybe be the second dumbest comment this year following mike h's stupid comment about the rs/ss thing.

3" sounds just fine to me. I find that the rasp isn't as bad as many make it out to be. Mine sounds good throughout the rpm gauge, and I was leary about buying the Flowmaster 3" for this reason. I like the way it sounds.

omfg. does the 3'' sound worse than a 2.5'' or not? and is there a HP difference?

ok, i was looking into the flowmaster cat-back, and it says it has a resonator between the cat and the muffler. IF i got this exhaust, should i take that off? or does it actually help it to sound better?

Look, the sound quality is totally subjective. What one person likes, someone else may not. So listen to sound clips of the different exhaust setups, and figure out which one you like best.

If you're more concerned with performance than sound, then either get the 3" or get a cutout.

              It's really that simple.

I have a 2.5" flowmaster 80 series and it does sound good. It's a little raspy around 5000 rpm but it makes a nice sound. Although I am going to go with a 3" full catback later down the road.
Ask FireFighter, he has heard it. It's not THAT bad

Ok, now I will say the final word on the subject.
All things being equal, I would recommend 3" pipe over 2.5" because it sounds alright and should flow better.

However, the 2.5" Flowmaster V6 specific catback sounds much better than a 3" V8 kit slapped onto the car. You can try to mimic the effect with a 3" bullet muffler, but that of course is a little extra money. So in the end I would say that if you are going to limit yourself to intake and exhaust mods, go with the 2.5" V6 catback. If you think somewhere down the line you will require a higher flowing exhaust system (ie for FI, nitrous, or a wild NA build), go with 3".

If you guys think 2.5'' sounds better than 3'' you are either deaf or have a very weird taste in sound.

3'' Owns, PLEASE LOCK THIS THREAD.
