  • Exhaust newbie, a little help?

Alright, all I've done to my car is get a flowmast muffler welded on for $89.99 at a muffler shop. I really want to get into cars and whatnot, but I need a place to start. I figure full exhaust is a good way. Try not to flame me, I am a total newb at this stuff...

I want to have a very nice, deep roar to my engine. My current flowmaster muffler sounds alright at low RPMs, and idle, but the higher RPMs, it gets too high pitched for my liking...

I have a 97 3.8l v6 camaro, and I want to make it soudn better, as well as perform better. I don't know the first thing about exhaust, anyone care to link me to some helpful resources, or personally help me and answer questions?

click on the " exhuast clips" thread on the top of the page ans see what you like. theres no real way to get around the raspy/high pitch sound at high RPM's. most people will just tell you to search but that doesnt alway work. most of the time it will though. the search function is great.

    as for sites

with any flowmaster you will get that from our cars. i have to admit that i have it too. but when my nitrous kicks on and my exhaust starts to screem, omg it sounds great. i also have header, high flow cat, and a custom s pipe to by pass my res. on the flow

Face it, you bought a v6 buddy, it will never sound like a v8. But if you're insistent on trying to get as close as possible then you will need:
        </font>
        • Headers Pacesetters, Clear Image Automotive, & RK Sports are your choices.</font>
        • High Flow Cat or no cat at all, which is illegal by the way, will improve the sound and efficency a lot.</font>
        • A cutout, electric or manual, would be the best way to improve sound and horsepower. Beware though, it is again illegal to ride around setting off car alarms and waking up the neighbors at 1 A.M. with the cutout open.</font>

Good luck on your quest for a great sounding car.

          Thanks for the information.

I don't want it to sound incredible, but I don't like the fact that I'm cruising through the neigborhood gonig 25 and it sounds like a crotch-rocket just drove by going 40. I looked around a little at summit racing for headers, but don't know exactly what I need. I was told I need "shorty" headers, not quite sure what they are.

Not really sure what a high flow cat is, I'm assuming a catalytic converter, which I don't know what the function of it is.

if you dont want it to sound incredible(which i am confused what you mean), which i assume you mean loud maybe? Than exhaust mods are not for you.

But if you do want loud and if you are short on cash, get Pacesetter headers off ebay non coated or coated, a catco or magnaflow cat, S Pipe, and a catback(borla, SLP, Rumbler, etc). That will make your car sound as good as it can.

Sorry to soudn a bit confusing...

I do want my car to be loud, but I'm not striving to get a v8 sound out of it... just the best I can on a budget.

I don't know a whole lot about cars, I like the sound of it with just my muffler, at idle and low RPMs, however I don't like the sound of it at high RPMs. I planned on modding further, but I didn't know where to start.

I get paid tomorrow, meaning I'll have a bit of money to spend. What would be the first mod I should look into (Completely stock with a flowmaster muffler) What would give me the best performance (and sound) boost for my money? Or maybe I should invest in a CIA before I put anymore into exhaust?

If i were you and on a budget.

Headers: Non Coated Black Pacesetters - $200
High Flow Cat: Catco or Carsound/Magnaflow - $50
                  S-Pipe: LT1 Apapter - $80
Cat-Back: Rumbler - $260 with tips, but you will want the Borla if you want it quieter. But those run a pretty penny.

Now that i look at it that setup and any setup is going to be pretty loud no matter what. and since you say
I do want my car to be loud
you should really question if you want any exhaust mods because no matter what combo of headers/cat/catback its going to be loud.

As for intake get a whisper lid and filter. That will add sound but the second you get a catback you will never hear it again.

I have CI headers, a free flow cat, 3" exaust and a dual tip Z-28 muffler. It's not loud, it is deep sounding and works great.
