Octagon's give the highest flow numbers. The 45º degree welds (360º/8) most closely approximate the natural turbidity vortexes in a gas that's 1) heated to exhaust temperatures and 2) flowing through a 2"-3" pipe.

Less disruption implies a more laminar flow, and subsequently, better flow numbers. You can browse for octagonal cat's here.

then why arent guns octagonal shaped? They're round for a reason. Thats obvious.

First of all, you're an idiot. Everyone is laughing at you right now. I'm sorry you don't get the joke.

Second, you can't exactly rifle an octagonal barrel. Since the bullet can't turn, there's no way to spin it.

Third of all, what part of "2-3 inch pipe" didn't you understand? How does that apply to guns?

Fourth of all, What part of "exhaust gas temperatures" didn't you understand? Exhaust gas temperature for a gasoline 4-cyle engine run around 500-900ºF. The Potassium nitrate in black powder has a decomposition temperature of 400ºF.

Fifth of all, you're an idiot. I know I already said that, but it's worth repeating.
