  • just got a firebird, what mods first?

well, i totaled my dodge stratus bout 3 weeks ago and i went out and bought a black 96 firebird 5-speed, always wanted one of these. I wanna do a few mods to help it out though and i figure start with the exhaust and intake. Im not too familiar with products for these cars so i just need some advice on what to get. I want to do catback but i dont want to empty my wallet, id like a good sounding exhaust and ive heard good things about flowmaster american thunder, and ive heard of the SLP intake and all and ive seen some weak looking intakes on ebay, but what products do you guys think would give me the best bang for the buck? im willing to spend money, but i dont need the top of the line stuff, all opinions welcomed!

The slp intake is pretty good for the 93-97 f-body's also if you dont want to break the bank you can get a TSP rumbler for 300 new, its a little loud but nice. the other way you can go is the way of the electronic cutout, this alows you to open you exhaust before or after your cat whenever you want and then close it back up. if you want one of those look up qtec. the next thing i would recomend after that is a limited slip differential and some 3.42 gears in your rear end. happy modding ;)

intake and exhaust are the first mods. spl intake is a great buy... much better than the ebay crap. find it at almost any of the site sponsors online.

I had a flomaster cat-back. not bad sound and a nice performance gain. I love my magnaflow setup (some people bash it, but I run it with headers... couldnt tell you what its like without) and being all stainless steel, its a great buy for the money. Also in the price range and favorites of many on this site are the Texas Rumbler from www.texas-speed.com and the SLP Loudmouth, but you have to be going for a real loud setup if you plan on buying those systems.

      Welcome and good luck.

would the texas rumbler catback without the tips be the way to go? i dont really want the oval tips, im more of the straight chrome pipe person. whats the big difference between this and the flowmaster?

theres nothing simialar about the flowmaster and the rumbler. flowmaster will be pretty tame.... too tame for most of the young people around this board. rumbler is going to be real loud. weather or not its the way to go is dependant on what you want. you want a more tame mellow sound, or you want a real loud rumble (no pun intended).

as far as simialarities, they use completely different types of mufflers. flowmaster uses a traditional chambered style muffler in the stock location, rumbler uses a bullet style not to far behind the cat.

If you get the rumbler without tips, you wont have the nice chrome slash tips you want. you can buy them and get them welded on though.

both the magnaflow and flowmaster systems I bought come with the slash tips.

Get an LT1 V8 takeoff and make sure to get th I pipe. sounds stealthy at idle, but really roars when you hit. Should be able to pick that up pretty cheap. Thant and a Catco cat 3" in/out.

the flowmaster has less performance gains than the rumbler though. its not a huge difference but it is there. the best performance is the cutout though. a cutout with a v8 take off exhaust is the best way to go imho... maybe thats why im doing that.

a cut out bypasses you exhaust where ever you put it...so if you but it on the y-pipe befroe the cat whenever u opened it up you would run just an open y-pipe...no muffler

cut out might be a bit much. I'd go with a full 3" exhaust setup, and a good intake system like the slp or fast toys.
