  • Replacing cat with bullet muffler??

My state (Idaho) doesn't have emissions testing, so we can do pretty much whatever the hell we want. My car started stinking pretty bad so I got a "direct OEM replacement" cat from Schucks (Checkers) Auto Parts for $110 and the damn thing isn't even close to the same as mine and because it had to be special ordered, they won't take it back. So I'm S.O.L. there....

Anyway has anyone replaced their cat with a bullet muffler? Dynomax has one 18" long for like $35 and Summit has one for $20. If figure I can cut the ball/socket connector off the end of my old cat and weld it on the bullet muffler and fit it just like it was a cat, for easy removal in case I ever sell the car.
    Good idea, bad idea???

Personally I think it is a bad idea. You dont have to be stupid just because its legal. Its everyones air. Now on a smogged down V8, I could maybe see the point. But on another reason, it WILL sound like crap! Just do it the right way, then you dont have to worry if you ever move, or sell the car. JMO though. Good luck! ;)

Yeah I'm not selling my car. On the air issue, we have LOTS of trees and a properly tuned car won't emit much more pollution than a catted car.

If you are worried about air pollution, petition for china to meet clean air standards. We don't hold a candle to that awakening industrial giant. ;)

                  Not ranting, just saying..lol.

Actually...having a Cat is a federal law and tampering with it is very illegal. I'm not saying people don't do it and that cops always check....but last I heard the fine was around $5K if you get caught with no cat. Just because there is no emissions testing doesn't mean that there is no law requiring a cat.
