• Flowmaster vs. Dynomax

I know this question is on here 50 times, but too many people give opinions. I don't want opinions, I want hard facts. Which one is better? The Flowmaster 80 is $100, the Dynomax super turbo is $50. There's got to be some sort of difference between them? If I got a whole new system: I-pipe, muffler, and tail pipes, which do I pick? I can't make up my mind because I'm going insane reading everyone's posts. HELP!!

You get many opinions b/c thats all it is-- an opinion. There is going to be very little difference performance wise w/ just the muffler. The performance differences are going to be in the size of pipe you go with. Therefore there is no advantage IMO for either muffler (performance wise). From what i've heard... if you like a louder sound go with the flow, and for a somewhat smoother mellower sound go with the dynomax.

But who am i to talk.. i chose no muffler. ;) :D

edit: BTW, i know the frustration. I went insane trying to pick an exhaust setup..ask anyone around here. :D Just make your best guess if you don't have a way to hear each setup in person... you can always just change the muffler later. Like i said, the performance differences are going to be in the pipe diameter you choose.

From what I have heard in PERSON! I like the flowmaster the best. I have 80 series on mine and they sound great on my V6.

I have Dynomax, and I like it because I don't like to be loud in a V6, it just doesn't sound right to me. V8, now then I like it LOUD. My dyno gives a mellower tone than the Flowmaster. If I want people to hear me coming from a distance, I'll spin my wheels.

i've heard both in person and i've got to say i like dynomax alot better. flowmaster is awesome at idle but with stock pipes rices out up high. my dynomax isn't as loud but sounds good all the way through the rpm band

Hey man, I'm in the same boat wit ya! I'm going to the GM junkyard tomorrow and see if they have a V8 I-pipe. So here is my list:

2.75" I-pipe(supposedly comes with S-part)
Dynomax Super Turbo Muffler(WLK-17739 at Summit)
2.5" tailpipes(WLK-42316, WLK-42318 at Summit)
Quad tips from Fast-Toys

My cat was just clogged to death a month and a half ago, had no time to buy an aftermarket Catco(6007) and was also worried about SES light. So, I just went with a GM Universal 3" Cat. I don't think it's high flow, but the rumble got slightly more noticeable(louder).

So ~20 for I-pipe
~56 for muffler
~60 for tailpipes
~80 for tips

~$216 b4 shipping and install. Friend's friend is a welder so I'll give him $40 for the trouble. I guess I should expect it to be in excess of $300.

And yes, a man can go insane reading thru all those threads! But like the guy above said, it's a V6, so I don't want it to be so loud, it can get annoying,.,.hehe,.,.,. and besides, most everyone can agree that the Dynomax is a bit more quiet and has no rice. But lots of people mention the Flows sounds ricey above 3k rpms. I prolly expect no more than 8 horses,.,.,

hey f1gt the s-part is only on 93-95 v8's, in 96 they switched to dual cat system so there's no s-pipe, so you might not be able to find one. just fyi, i looked into it too

Just a quick note for some. The place where I'm getting mine done is doing it a whole lot cheaper than most of you are talking about. I'm not sure why, but for others interested in doing this I'd take my car around to some different places. I live in a small town of 8,000 and found a guy who custom does mufflers. He quoted me at $110 for everything but an I-pipe and new cat (Dynomax Super Turbo, 3" tail pipes, and tips). I'm gonna just try to find an old V-8 I-pipe for $10 and live without a new Cat. Unless he can get me a cheap, cheap cat. Any thoughts on not changing the cat?

Well, the tailpipes listed above is suppose to be from Dynomax. I'd rather buy them fo 30 bucks a piece than have a shop do it because I've see 'maros where they have two pipes comin' out of the end and one pipe is of a different distance from the center of the car than the other. Knowing my luck, and "pickiness," that'll prolly happen to me. And it's mandrel bent, dunno about some shops, mite give you the "cheapie" bend or something.
Well, those tips he's gonna give u are prolly the ubiquitous kinds of tips you see on Pick-ups/SUVs, etc. You can find those in PepBoys, Kragen, etc...The one I'm getting are quad-tips,.,.so I expect to pay at least 35 bucks a side.

If I find an old Z-28 (2.75") I-pipe, Dynomax doesn't make a muffler 2.75", I'd have to get the 2.5" one. Then, also get 2.5" tips (I think). Will I lose any power or sound since whoever does this will have to make adjustments with going through the different size pipes? The guy told me to get a new a Dynomax Super Turbo 3" muffler and he'd put 3" outs on it. So should I do that and have a 2.75" I-pipe?

well the Flowmaster is more aorund $70-$80 from Summit, so that puts you closer to the Dynomax range. Dynomax probably flows a little better than the Flow, as most do. Flowmaster flows the least of most mufflers out there. Flowmaster is good in respect because of the way it's designed to cancel certain frequencies of sound so you only get a mellow tone. I personally wanted a more V8 sound and you'll get that from the Flowmaster and not Dynomax.
