  • Thermostat question

what is the difference between a 160 degree and a 180 degree thermostat from SLP? and is one better for the car than the other?

160° for southern folks, who rarely turn on the heat in your car.

180° for us in the northern climates, who don't want to freeze during our daily winter-time commutes.

The temp rating indicates when the thermostat will open, causing the coolant circulating through the motor to flow out to the radiator to be cooled, then back through the thermo to the motor. Once it is cooled below the temp rating, the thermo will close again, keeping the coolant circulating through the engine only. The lower the thermostat temp rating, the sooner it will open and allow the coolant to pass through the radiator.

And if you have a 2001 with a 160 deg and it is cold out, you will constantly get an SES for low engine temp.
