http://hometown.aol.com/atl2001/pics/camaro/cai.jpg

that was on my 3.4L it cost around 40$ (air filter from the rice section of autozone, 3" PVC tube, 3 3" 90* elbows, PVC glue)

it made a noticeable diff, but the way that i had it routed it went under the car to get to the area where it pulled the air (where the K&N CAI's get the air) so it killed my ground clearance

i then bought a K&N CAI used and replaced my homemade unit, i didnt feel any diff in ammount of power, but it certainly looks better and its not held on by a set of hose clamps

I removed the air silencer and bought a 3"(diameter) section of PVC(approx 5" in lenght)painted it black and put it in between the throttle body and lid(it's in between the 2 rubber accordian looking things, look between the screws).
Now, for the free ram air(cutting out the bottom portion of the airbox)do a search on the site their is a website that has instructions. Also I de-finned the airbox lid.
As far as gains go I'm not real sure if it made a good amount of HP or not, the most significant thing was the exhaust note deepend . The cost CHEAP, under 10 bucks. PVC, hose clamps and some black spray paint. I should have taken a side shot of my engine then you would be able to tell alot better.
Hope that helps you out some
Shane

My car is a 3.8 but here's a few of my custom ones I went through over the years.

Ram Air

The ram air didn't work out too well after a while.

Cold Air 1

So I shipped up this little cold air intake. Unfortunatley it couldn't stay in the throttle body too well unless the MAF screen was out.

Cold Air Final

So I arrive at my last design. I reduced the intake pipe a little bit and added an 3 inch rubber elbow to it for flexability which flawed in the previous design. I plan to upgrade the filter later to a K&N but i've been using my CAI now for over a year and it works great.

I sure do, took some pics a min ago just for you. I'll explain a little bit too.

Pic 1

Pic 2

Pic 3

Pic 4

I bought a 3inch angled rubber peice from lowes for about $15. You can basically hack up any cars intake to get a little section you need. I forget which car's intake I used. And any cone filter can work. I used an APC because i was just trying to get my car together at the time and it was pretty cheap as a temporary solution. I would recommend using a K&N universal cone filter if you can find one around. I just haven't had time to replace my corny looking filter.

As for it extending to the underneath. Cooler is better but I think it's not going to make that much of a difference to go all out of my way to do. Plus it doesn't have a long route to travel to suck up air.

Good luck and let us all see your final design on whatever you do.

Hey, thanks for the pics. I really appreciate it.

As far as that primary rubber piece, where did you get that, and what is it supposed to be for, plumbing?

Ill be using a K&N filter definately.

Yes, I went to lowes and bought it for about $15. It is in the plumbing section, you should see it there. It's 3 inches but I forget what kind of angle it is. They only have a couple where I was so I just picked one that best suited what I thought it would be. If you get it, use some vaseline or some kind of lubricant to help fit it on the throttle body and then clamp it. It took me a while to get mine on their at first, but now it's really easy to put on and take off.

I just cut out the air silencer and that made a big difference with my exhaust of course.

I have the SLP CAI for my 97... the piece I added was a scoop at the bottom. Cost $7 at Home Depot for the piece, required a bit of drilling and three bolts, one with lock nuts. 2 hour total time invested.

scoop
scoop2
scoop3

As for gains, i haven't seen any :( :( :(

I dont' think i'm going fast enough in the quarter to feel any benefits as this is somewhat of a 'ram-air' ish thing. I'm hoping that once i get my mph into the 90's it might make a difference.

Nonetheless, it looks cool and it's completely original
