  • Cam Talk.?

alright I here so much that cams will kick HP up pretty nicely..

what is a price range and is it worth it?

where do you look to buy them at? what kinda gains will you get?

If you ask 100 different people you will get 100 different answers. But here is my shot at it.

To support an agressive cam you will need a few things. You should have headers and a good cat-back exhaust (this is to get the gasses out of the engine effectively). You need a good flowing intake system such as a Cold Air Induction package (to get the air in more effectively). You will need to upgrade your injectors (to get more fuel). Finally, you will need programing for the new injectors and the cam. Once you have all this, you are ready for a cam.

Now, an aggressive cam can yield you a lot of HP. A cam like the GT2 cam from Comp Cams can put you about 60 hp (or more) over stock. You can get cams and cam packages from a number of locations. ZZPerformance, Texas Speed, Jegs, and Summit are a few that come to mind.

Expect to pay about $700 for the cam and things like springs, connecting rods, and install kit. Installation is free if you do it yourself but I have seen people say a shop will do it for around $300.

For the supporting mods, here is a guess:
    Cold Air Induction $20-$250
    Headers $300
    Cat back exhaust $300
Tuning $200 (or buy a package for $400)

To get the most out of this you will need a LSD rear.

    Used rear $250

There are some other things you would need so plan on another $400.

Is it worth it? For me it was. However, the only one who can answer that for you is you.

    Good luck.

      forget that lol..

looks like im waiting for a LS1.. I wanted to fix this car up so bad but then I would be able to sell it and get a LS1 and run times like your running at stock so.. yea im gonna wait.. I cant even find any tuneing things for a 1996 3.8 and dont know any websites to check at either. Ive got a exhaust its not true dual but its flowmaster and I got a K&N CAI and a new Clutch Spec Stage II a 130dollar alternator. I run syenthic oil. Mobile 1. and I have a belt that is stronger than normal because this one is just stiffer basically they said if I pay 10 bux more it will be a different belt but better so I did. I dont know what to do tho.. help me find something like a power programmer or chip or something..

DHP makes tuning for your car. check in the sponsor arena on this site for info. do not get a chip or power programmer. they are crap and a waste of money. if you dont want to pay $400 for tuning software to do it yourself for $200 you can have Texas speed tune it for you. again check the sponsor arena.

so you have basic intake/exhaust. i would probably get headers and gears/LSD(unless your car has a Y87 package) then do the cam

Texas speed can also do your tuning. Look around first, I don't think you should be looking at cams just yet, finish the supporting mods if you are going to continue with this motor.

only 180!!! What the crap.. how can that be?

its a 3.8 200 base at the flywheel but you should loose 20HP getting it to the rear! and with flowmasters and just a CAI it should be like 205 210 or more.

HAHAHAHAHA, Keep telling yourself that, I dynoed 184rwhp and 208 rwtq. I was running mid 14's, you are no where close to that, I would bet you don't even have 180rwhp.

yyyyyyup :D ..but i would search it a lot more..by the way..the 180 rwhp is due to drivetrain loss..that is what you actually see at the rear wheels..you could be putting down something in the 170s..James puts down around 180 naturally aspitated and runs 12.1 on nitrous..i'll be putting down about the same naturally aspirated and am guessing mid - high 12s on nitrous
