What does the resonator actually do. I have it on my Flowmaster catback.

Reduce Horse Power!

And makes the exhaust sound better.

Its a trade-off. However, it probably reduceds HP less then you could even measure so unless you have a need to take it off (I took it off to put my cut-out there), leave it.

Most people like the way they sound, I wouldn't take it off unless you need to put a cutout their like arthansen said. It keeps the rasp out of your exhaust for the most part. I would worry about a loss of hp to much tho.

its not restricting any out flow. it goes what firefighter said, reduce the rasp. it acts more like a chamber for sound then a problem.

and you would install this inline with the muffler, or replace the muffler altogether?
I will take on all comers...or come on all takers!!! Whichever you prefer.

Usually inline. I think the slp LM just uses a resonator only...no oval muffler.

Like everyone else already said...it deepens the tone and kills the higher end frequencies before they exit the tail pipes. (as opposed to just a muffler. If the resonator or bullet muffler (glass pack) is followed by a more standard oval muffler then this is the case.

If you just had a resonator the car would be LOUD. If you just have a muffler you may not like the raspy tone over 3000 rpm or so. In that case some people add resonator or fiber glass filled bullet muffler witch is also non restrictive as it is a straight through perf tube.

i understand..but how so?
for instance the flowmaster muffler, the muffler is right under the gas tank, where would u locate the resonater?
after the muffler on the j-bends <the exit pipes>
or before the muffler but after the cat?
i think this will be my last question on this, since location is the only thing that im cunfused about now...Thank you
