  • Question regarding TB and issue I have

My car is currently having a problem with the throttle.

Basically, I took the throttle body off to clean it, and I ended up taking the actual butterfly off of the body to clean.

When I put it back in the car, I now have a problem where if my AC is off and I have driven for a while (usually twenty minutes or more), coming from a stop if I press on the gas a bit and pull the clutch out a bit (like moving forward two or three feet in stop+go traffic) and then push the clutch back in the engine will rev up to like 3200 rpm and stay there for roughly five seconds. I scared the s**t out of the mcdonalds people today by accident.

The GM Dealership told me that this was because I screwed with the butterfly, but that doesn't make sense to me. Something like the MAF or IAC would make more sense to me, but I am a noob.

So, here is my question: From my problem, do you think that I need a new throttle body?
If not, what do you think is the problem?

    Thanks

Edit: It also revs to about 1300 rpm for a split second on startup before settling at regular idle.

I would've said it sounds more like IAC or TPS, but you don't have those. In your car, it's all built into the Throttle Actuator Control module.

It does seem like something just wasn't reinstalled correctly. I don't see any reason why you would need a new TB unless something is really screwed. Maybe try taking it off and checking everything over real good?

My car is a 1996, so it does have an IAC and TPS. I've replaced the IAC though, and the TPS seems to work fine. I guess I will check with a multimeter.

Edit: I originally had a very high idle too, but messing with adjusting the butterfly fixed that.

Wow, I don't have a clue wtf I was thinking. For some reason I though you said you had an 01...sorry about that.

I would check both the IAC and the TPS. Even just remove and replace in case something isn't seated right. I've heard of people putting one of those in backwards and causing all kinds of problems.

I'd go out and take it apart 3-4 more times until it worked.

I doubt you need a new TB, just like said your IAC or TPS isn't lined up right.

My car (1996 camaro 3.8L) revved at 3,000 + rpm's too when my IAC went bad. Autozone has them for about $30.

So you guys think I Should try replacing the IAC again? I am pretty sure the TPS is on right because during 99% of the time the throttle works correctly.

Personally, I would. You can always keep it as an extra if it isn't your problem.

**The next time you pull the IAC out, get a pipe cleaning brush and clean the inside of the IAC's hole by spraying the brush with TB cleaner and lightly scrubbing the inside of the hole. There may be alot of carbon buildup in there that gets onto the IAC, thus keeping it from self-adjusting.

Well, I know that the IAC adjusts because I've put it in there with it compressed and when I took it back out it was at regular length (roughly middle).

Edit: I'm getting the new IAC now. Hope it works!!

Edit Edit: I've cleaned the hole, resest the pcm (ten minutes without the two fuses), installed the new IAC, turned her on and let her warm up, going out now to see if she does it.

BTW, did I mention I removed the MAF screen (accidentally damaged it while taking it off to clean the TB, so no more screen :( )? I forgot lol. I don't think it would cause these problems though.

OK, the new IAC did not fix the problem. I'm guessing now it's either TPS, MAF, or the actual throttle body. If no one has any other suggestions I guess I will just buy a TB from Hockeyman.

Before you buy a new TB, take the whole thing off, disassemble, and reassemble it.

I've done that three times now though ( did it before taking it into the dealer ). Then, they did it at the dealer's too. I've put on new gaskets, triple checked everything. The first re-assembly fixed a high idle problem, but after that, nothing.

I am just fed up at spending over $350 and over a week of my time on this problem and getting nowhere.

                          Wow! $350???
Is your SES light coming on? If not, I'll send you my bare (no sensors) TB in the mail. Put your sensors on it and install it. Send me your old TB when you're done and we'll call it even. I'll just break it all down, then clean & paint it again.

If you do have an SES code, I'll sell you my TB which was cleaned, painted, and complete with sensors (working MAF & TPS) for $65 shipped.

Let me know which one you want.

I don't have any SES lights, Hockeyman, but to go ahead and eliminate the MAF and TPS sensors as being problems, I'd like to go ahead and get the one with the sensors.

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it.
