to the wheels maybe another 5-15. thats being generous. it will make your car run a lot smoother and have a little deeper tone at idle. at least mine did. what you might want to look is the free home depot lid. i got a real one and my friend found this mod and did it and it felt like the exact same gains  he did it for like 6 bucks. but everybodys reacts different. so yes you will feel gain, and will get a better tone.98 Camaro V6

What is this free home depot lid you are talking about?

what would a high flow cat do to my car? or is it just a waste of money?98 Firebird 3.8L
17\' chrome wheels, B&B triflo w/ quad, window tint, rear black outs

If you have stock exhaust, a cat would be a waste of money. Before getting a new cat, upgrade you muffler and I-Pipe.
The "Home Depot" lid just means going to Home Depot to buy some tubing to replace the stock piping and breaking off the tabs on the bottom of the stock lid, instead of buying a Whisper lid. I would just buy the Whisper lid, as it looks much better.

You're not going to notice any gain if you upgrade only your intake and leave your stock exhaust on. At least I didn't. You'll notice a more throaty sound from your engine in the cockpit; I'm sure that comes from just removing that silly looking air silencer. But I agree with Matt, if you've got the funds, I'd buy the new lid. It looks much better than a piece of pipe from Home Depot stuck in there. If you don't really care about looks inside your engine bay, do a search for Home Depot lid and you'll find instructions in one of those posts.2002 Firebird
Mods: Whisper CAI and Lid, K&N, Edelbrock Cat-Back, Hurst Billet Plus Shifter w/Lou\'s Short Stick, BMR STB, 32mm front sway bar w/polygraphite bushings and end links, PHB polygraphite bushings, HPP3 tuned

However, you might have a problem with the angle of your throttle body on 1998 3.8's. 99+ are all the same as mine.I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

I replaced my Home Depot Lid with a Whisper Lid.
If you have almost no money, you can't beat it, tho. Just call it a "high performance HDL airbox" and spray paint the pipe black.I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

I can't agree with this statement. Everything I have read from everyone who has upgraded their intake first has noticed gains. Almost all people start with the intake before going to exhaust and I don't think I have heard anyone complaing about a CAI, whisper lid, and K & N filter not adding power to their car.
I just installed these three mods last weekend and I notice a difference. Admittely I don't have any before or after dyno numbers to quantify this but the power gain is very noticeable when accelerating to enter the Interstate and from 50-70 mph it is quite impressive. Also, 0-60 seems improved too; however, since as I mentioned above I have no dyno numbers to quantify this I have an open mind that it may just be psychological (I expect an increase so I feel one). Psychological affect aside I am pretty certain that my 0-60 acceleration is improved.
Other people's insights about this would be appreciated.
