I noticed a "feel it in the seat of my pants" gain when I gutted mine. But I don't have emissions testing here in Wyoming. It's easy and it was worth while for me, but it is a debated topic. I'm not trying to start any flames here.

Also, your car is a 96 right? You have sensors that will trip your SES light. You would have to purchase a product that throws a signal to the PCM that says the cat is there. i'm on the other side....prolly worth a horse or two. wouldn't waste my time or money. why hurt the enviroment for that?(and i'm no tree hugger hippy, but for something that small it ain't worth it) and no offense but don't trust anyone's SOTP meter could jsut be psychological gains cause you want to believe what you did helped out. unless you gain 20 or thirty horse you prolly aren't gonna feel it.i was swimming in the carribean. animals were hiding behind the rocks except for the little fish, but they told me the squid\'s trying to talk to me. oink, oink. where is my mind?

I'm not due for emissions until 2003... however, I will have a high flow cat and full exhaust by then.
I just hope the sound isn't too loud. When I say loud I mean "your exhaust is broken" loud... and not "that's a sweet sounding exhaust" kinda loud.
Would a high flow cat give the same "gain" you speak of by gutting the cat?
also... my cat has many little holes in it (I guess came like that from the factory)... if I gutted my cat, then wouldn't the exhaust just seep out through the holes and create a problem with that?Sean: 1994 Camaro daily driver

Deuce Biggs, I agree with you. I'm no tree hugger either, and I'm soon putting a highflow cat in, it's just the fact that my Cat was all plugged up and choking out my car. I gutted it to put off the purchase of an 80 dollar part until I can get my school books bought. I'm a poor college bastard.
Maybe the gains seemed bigger after driving it with it all clogged up for so long. I did however, find it much easier to roast the tires and top end seemed a lot faster.(even quite a bit better than stock) Maybe it's just me, and you also have to realize I have the 3.4 liter. Sorry for any flames. I was just stating my personal opinion. Cool?
CokewhiteRS(coke?...hmmmmm)he he. Your cat shouldn't have holes all over it, it is probably just the heat sheild or whatever. It's welded on the bottom half. It is just a layer of steel. As for the cat, it's like a big thick heavy ceramic filter inside. When the exhaust heats it up, the red hot ceramics burn the excess fuel in the exhaust that normally would pollute our air. It's a pain to pound out the insides, and the exhaust is quite a bit louder. Not quite broken, but it is loud. After time, mine has quieted a lot, and deepend. But at first, I didn't like the sound. I'm kinda liking it now.
For you, it would be better to get a high flo cat. You would not only pass emissions, but you wouldn't have to spend the fifty bucks on that fake sensor. The cost of the sensor would almost cover a high flo cat. If you do decide to gut it, email me. I have some great hints that will make it a ton easier. I could probably even send a few pics your way. Also, you might considder just getting a factory sized flanged pipe to put in the place of the cat. It wouldn't be as loud. The Cat is a big hollow reservoir when gutted, and it resonates a bit.Teal 94 Camaro 3.4 Liter
Transgo stage 3 shiftkit, Shift module, corvette servo, SLP cold air induction,3.42 ring and pinion, Heavy Duty Posi LSD, Flowmaster exhaust, NX, blackouts
