Has anyone removed the entire egr system. I'm probably going to do it bec. I broke the bolt that holds the egr tube to the exhaust manifold. Anyone know of any Cons/ Pros of doing this? Other than the ses light and legality.
I did a search and it seems that the only thing done like this is to block off the system. Why not remove the whole thing (lose the weight).

I busted the hose that comes off the header and instead of fixing it I just bent it over its self so it doesn't leak exhaust fumes out of there.
My egr hose from the headers has been like this for years and I'm in the 12's
I don't poass emmissions though and I do have a legal cat
It would be cool to get rid of more weight though

Ok I have now removed the whole egr system. Car runs fine (does throw a 405 and 403 code). Only problem I'm having is I cant keep the exhaust manifold hole sealed. Everytime I drive it opens up more and is loud as hell. Off to sears to get a kit to get that damn bolt out so I can just use a plate to block it off.
The whole system weighs in at about 5lbs with the bracket out too. Where the bracket was there are two decent sized bolts on the head. Could be possible to mount a s/c bracket there. hmmm. . .
All problems solved not even an ses now. Cleared it about 6 times though. Man was that embarrassing earlier when my exhaust manifold plug came out. Limped home for about 5 blocks lots of noise very little power. Not a mod to be done if you have no way of clearing ses codes.

I went down this road too. Plugged the intake hole with a tire valve stem. Cut a piece of old exhaust gasket material (steel) with tin snips, to block off the exhaust hole. Completely removed the bracket, tubes, and solenoid.
I reused the mounting clips for the tubes, to hold the blockoff materials in place on the intake and exhaust.
Starting setting codes. No biggie, except....
With the solenoid unhooked from the wiring harness, my auto trans would not shift correctly from 3 to 4, it would hit the limiter if I was running wide open, and would not shift up at all. The only way to get it to shift up was to let completely off the gas.
So I hooked the solenoid back up to the wiring harness, and just propped the solenoid up. Cleared the codes, and the transmission started shifting ok again.
I still get a code, where the pcm detects there is no exhuast flowing into the intake when the solenoid opens. But not the code for the solenoid failing to operate....
The main advantage of removing or disabling the egr, is not getting all that soot buildup. There is no advantage at wot, because the egr is already disabled at wot anyway.
They sell a block off plate. And tell you how to block off the EGR w/o throwing a SES code.
But its illegal so I would advise against it.

I didn't throw any codes all of yesterday, but first thing this morning when I started it up it threw the same 403/405. Sorry no pics. Still cant get that damn bolt out though. I pluged the hole by tapping it and putting a plug in there.
One more thing if you do remove the mount you'll have to find another place to secure the dipstick tube.

When does the egr open? I've searched for that too and heard some pretty funny stuff. When going up hills was my favorite . I'm thinking it's only open when the engine is cold. This would explain why yesterday it didn't throw any codes, but this morning it did. Yesterday I was driving all around so the engine would have stayed pretty warm all day.

I can tell you when it does not open. Not when idling, because it would impact the idle quality too much). And not at wot, because it would impact max performance due to diluting the intake charge.
It will open only at certain part-throttle settings, and only under certain load conditions, but I don't konw what those are exactly.
The light doesn't get set until the pcm has detected the error on three different cycles, I believe. That would be why it didn't light at first, and did the next day.
