I took off my Ram Air box today (I haven't taken it off in like 6 months) And the MAF screen is a little dicked up. Not too bad just looks a little shabby and I also found bits of debree that almost got through it was stuck in it (Guess I shouldn't have taken off my airfilter at the track). Could it being dicked up a little mess up performance any and would a brand new one help?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Well, thats a long story really. A while ago i made this type thing on the side called the peltier effect. It's a long explanation but pretty much it makes something cold (like a freezer) I just hooked it in the bottom of the ram air right before it hit the throttle body, but didn't notice any performance. It didn't actually freeze like a freezer. It was just like a cold rod pushed in it. I'm sure with some work maybee it would help but it's not worth the hassle, plus it was winter so i just sealed over the spot. So i'm sitting there thinking about how the ram air doesn't work effectively you'd only notice a gain if your cruzing like at 100mph. Theres no way there would be enough pressure to push air all the way down my tube and come around a 180degree bend into the throttle body. So I was at work one day fixing this vacuum and i was like you know what if anything I mise well just hook a freakin vacuum motor up and reverse it into the ram air so it blows air into it right before the throttle body. So I found this 5hp motor outta a shopvac and i've been working on it on the side for a bit. I hooked one version I had of it up and it worked pretty good. I didn't test it at the track yet. But I have it off again and i'm working on making it work a little more effectively. I didn't know to call it so I just said hey "Electronic Ram Air". Can't blame me for trying to improve the idea of Ram Air a little. UdIke on this board also had a pic of a firebird that hooked up a leaf blower to his ram air. Pretty cool. I'll keep you guys posted when I get some performance results.

What's up, MacGuyver? I think I know what you're talking about. The only thing is, to make it work properly with that airflow, it would have to be huge or you would need lots of them which would block airflow anyway. How did you run it off 12V?
You ARE kidding about the shop-vac, right?

LoL, whats up with the MacGuyver thing? Anyway i think I didn't explain myself that clearly i wasn't thinking when I wrote that. The motor I got puts out a good amount of air. The only thing is I don't want it to create turbulance. I have a small, i'd say about 1/2 tube I made that sits right in side the air box in the side. It won't block that much airflow, and it seems to put out a pretty good amount of air still. I'm not sure what you mean by "it would have to work with that airflow" there really isn't that much airflow that would be coming throug the ram air anyway. I think i have a pic of my old ram air system in my sig. Thats what it looks like now. Ok this is the funny part. I knew someone was gonna ask me how I got it to run off the 12v. The reason I have never tested it at the track yet or don't know any performance gains is because the car never actually ran with it on. When I put the first version i made of this thing on I just set it up to the way i'd want it in there and i just ran an extension cord to the garage. Turned it on with the car and reved it up and it seemed pretty good with it on. My friend matt is really good with electronics. I have a general knowledge about electronics but was wondering how to convert 120v to work off of a 12v battery myself. He says he thinks he knows a way. I don't think he's going to try to run it off of the car battery though. So he's going to help me with that soon. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Hopefully that'll work out in the next few months and i'll see how this thing actually works. Haven't really updated my sig in a while and when I added the Eram thing in there it was when I had my little peltier effect thing in there. I guess i left it there cuz it's an ongoing experiment. Anyway back to my original question about the MAF anyone know the answer? Ted
Enough tv already. Back to your MAF question. dont worry about messing it up. in fact, jam a screwdriver through it and take the darn thing out. Works much better.

So all that debris will be injested into the engine???? No way! Especially if a shop-vac is going to be running straight into the intake, after the filter I'm assuming.
I really want to know about this peltier dealy. It cools the air in the intake tube, right? Might need to start a new topic for this one. EVERYONE could use a cold, dense intake charge.

I got some info from my prin tech teacher about this thing called the peltier effect. It's not too hard to explain. It doesn't work good at all. In a nutshell it's connected to the battery, and the cable is connected to no more then a 1/4 diameter rod. along with that you take some copper wiring and coil it around the iron rod. The more coils the better. When the power is applied one side of the rod should become cold and one side should become hot. On my ram air system i placed it dirctly underneath the 180 bend so the hot side points towards the ground. The cold side goes into the ram air. It's hard to explain where I put it really because my ram air system is kind of unique. If the picture is working in my sig you'd understand. Anyway this is kinda how a freezer works. Of course they have gigantic generators and that type of stuff. Like I said it barely works at all. Maybee with some more work it'd help but with all the experimenting youd do and time you'd waste I wouldn't suggest it. I've about had it with these household mods, lol. The reason I asked the MAF question is because when I go down to the track I remove my airfilter. Which is probably why i have a lot of debris stuck on to my MAF. I don't want to take it off because then all that debris will go into my engine. Plus I heard all the mixed reviews on how it hurts/helps performance. I say just leave it on there, it probably wouldn't make a noticeable gain anyway. Let alone hurt it. Which is why I wondered if a brand spanking new one would actually help it out. Rather then my crapola one.
Peltiers are VERY high current devices and you need lots of them for it to work.
Also, without a supergood heatsink (like your car's radiator) you won't be able to cool it to freezing temperatures.
Now, I'm sure you could supercool the air by using an icecold peltier driven radiator somewhere in the intake - but I don't know how much cooler the air would be, and I cannot say how much intake restriction will be added because of this.
I'm afraid he's right, Ted. It's been a while since I've been in science class, but I remember those things being voltage hogs. Have you given any thought to experimenting with refrigerants?
About your MAF screen... I've heard on this board that they're really hard to get without buying the whole MAF. I'm sure you could clean it with a little carb cleaner if you were careful.
\'94 Camaro 3.4<br />\"No, Starvin Marvin. That\'s my pot pie.\"
That probably explains why it only turns cold just a little bit. And why I figured it wasnt even worth all the trouble. I have given thought into refrigerants and that was my first idea so I set out to find out exactly how they worked. And I learned about the peltier effect deal. I don't have a freezer to experiment on and I'm still keeping my eye open for one because I'm not going to spend the cash to buy one ya know? I dunno
heres a crazy *** idea...keep your filter on its there for a reason

it shaved .4 seconds off...... so you run almost 16.4 with those mods and your air filter on. are the 96's that slow, compared to the 2000's or did those mods take away horsepower rather than put more on?

Like in my signature file it says my car has too many issues. Im going to take the timeslip off because people keep flaming me for the time. On that very run. The first time I ran, my alternator died, my powersteering pump died, the leading edge on my rotors started scraping my brakes really bad and my transmission is dying. My transmission is horrible and is the key to why my car's been so slow. I have a ton of more mods then what I have listed that I haven't added to my sig yet. Anyway, i'm working on fixing the time, all this is costing money and time so we will have to see what my car runs eventually in a few more months.
Hey guys. For starters I’ve always been a big car guy, I love all types of cars and can appreciate all types of engineering. I’ve always been a Chevy...
Hello every one, ozzy here ive been looking at this page for weeks now finally joined. So my question is why is it that every turbo build forum just ends...
