• Crappy sound at high rpm w/ new exhaust setup?

Hey guys,
Just installed flowmaster 80 series dual kit, along with a custom made piece of pipe in place of the cat. I'm very pleased with the deep roar while idling or staying below 3000rpm. But as soon as i go over 3000 it turns into this high pitched open header-like sound. Sounds gross! Is this caused by not having a catalytic converter? or is it because of the 6cyl. engine? If i would put my cat. back on, would it quiet the roar? if so, i'd rather keep it the way it is. Thanx for ur time. Ur answers are appreciated

I have the 80 series flowmaster (part #42583) and it. I'm am very pleased and I do not get any high pitched sounds whatsoever. Sounds good throughout the rpm range, and I only had mine for 2 months so it will only get better with time.

Yeah, give it a little time to break in, it might sound better after that. If not, try putting the cat back on.

I agree, give it a little time. If you still don't like it, you could:

1. Put a high-flow cat on.
2. Put a Bullet muffler or resonator in place of the cat.
3. Put on a cat, then put a bullet/resonator inline with it somewhere along the I-pipe

Hmmm... sounds familiar....
If I am understanding you correctly, it sounds like the problem that many other board members have with their aftermarket exhaust. This is the "rice" they're talking about in the higher rpm's, especially common in the Flowmaster mufflers. There is not much you can do about it, although I've heard that the Dynomax Super Turbo muffler doesn't have this problem, and I've heard claims of other mufflers not doing this either. Personally, I've just gotten used to it, although I'm strongly considering changing to a Spintech.

I have the flowmaster 40 series, and I agree that the exhaust sounds dleicious under 3000 rpms, but over 3000, I feel like Im driving a civic. I put a high flow cat on and it got worse. So, I imagine that having no cat would make it even worse.

I'm going to try to quiet it down with a glasspack in front of the muffler. It was only 17 bucks, it cant hurt to try!

I don't think this is true for any 3.8L exhaust setup. Thats just how the motor sounds IMHO.

I seriously doubt anyone here has a sound clip of a 3.8 revving ALL the way up without rasp.

Our cars have an identity crisis. They sound like a V8 down low and an I4 up top.

That's just the way it is....

only way to fix it is to leave it stock.

If you have proof otherwise, gimme a sound clip.
