• Custom Ram Air

Has anyone made a custom Ram Air Kit like the Fast Toys kit out of sheet metal or some other material - how hard would this be? For $170 it seems your better off building your own. Right now I have the free CAI mod cut out but want to also do ram air. Has anyone done this? I saw one set-up with plastic tubing but I was looking for something more like the FTRA and SLP kits which are rectangular and cover more surface area - I figure sheet metal would work?????

Or better yet, does someone have a FTRA Kit not installed that could take measurements?

Finally... at least one other board member thinks that it is better to build one for less than $10 then buy the "professionally" built ones for $170!

Yes I have built one before... it was not for my car. We made it out of steel sheet metal and that was a real PITA. I recommend working with aluminum flashing. It's lighter, and much easier to bend and cut. If you build it out of aluminum it will be very easy as long as you have basic mechanical skills. There are instructions on the internet showing the dimensions and detalining the construction. I used to have a link, but I do not anymore. All you need to buy is a roll of aluminum flashing and some metal screws. Or I suppose you could use epoxy such as JB Weld to hold it together if you wanted.

I have some aluminum sitting in the trunk of my car, and have never gotten around to actually building the scoop. I might do that if i get too bored.

now take what im about to type as an opinon...

some say the ram air mod blocks a lot of the surface arear of the radiator and reduces cooling dramatically. i did the "free ram air" mod. you see, numer one, ram air isnt ALL THAT amazing and great. i mean its basically just a CAI. i have a ss ram air hood and the free ram air. im getting more than enough cold air to the engine. we do drive v6's, not huge 422 7.0l motors. If you are intrested in the free ram air go to www.installuniversity.com its on there. good luck wichever way you decide to go.

I know which one you guys are talkin about...I prolly saved it in my favortie places...I look for it....it had all dimensions angles and such...pretty nice....and I too find it stupid as hell to spend 170$ on sheet metal.....oh and Im prolly gonna rivet it together...maybee put some silicon on the seams to make it a little smoother???

EDIT: Told ya Id find it :D

          http://web.nmsu.edu/~shanemar/camaro/

click Modifications--->Install Help--->Cold Air induction...you have to have Adobe acrobat reader to view it..but it has all the dimensions and ****.....

          your welcome :D ;)

Edit again: ok now from me looking at this it looks as its almost a tunnel for the air to go through??? I saw on a site for 300+$ they wanted the same thing only it was made out of plastic...this isnt going to be the easiest thing to build....but I dont work weekends anymore :D :D

If you have the time, you can make just about anything. You can search for the necessary pieces you need, research the design, experiment with getting it to fit etc. However, most people want a complete professional kit that comes with instructions and can be installed easily.

As far as car parts go, 169.99 for a proven modification that will never wear is a pretty good deal. You also get manufacturer support, available replacement parts and options to buy upgrade parts as they are available.

            Good luck on your project!

Those are the exact specs that I used. However, on the 00+ you might find it advantageous to splite the scoop into two scoops, cause there is a little bar in the way that I don't remember from my friend's 99, but is on my 00.

That is really classy of you to knock one of our site sponsors. I have dealt with Philip at Fast Toys and he is an excellent businessman. I can almost guarantee that his product is superior to yours. But whatever floats your boat.

And Philip even has the class to wish you good luck on making your own, instead of pushing his own product. That tells you alot about his integrity.

I'd think twice before posting something like that.

That was $170US. Our dollar sucks *** right now. That's why I'm building my own. I might even sell them to the V8 guys in the Toronto area.

How much did you pay for your rims? Got pics?

Yeah $170.00 is a pretty good deal for parts that will fit the car and work- it will pay for itself considering how much time, money, and trial-and-error frustration would be involved in making your own ram air. I'll just go with free ram air until I get the $$ for FTRA, my 2 cents....
