  • Those of you with Z28 Pipes

I have the opportunity to get exhaust pipes from the cat back from a 95 Z28. I have not seen it yet, but 8 years old seems pretty old to me - is it worth it - do these pipes rust out? If I get the Z28's S, I & Tailpipes how much should I offer him? Also, how hard is a self install if I have a catco 3"in/out, all the Z28 pipes and a Dynomax Superturbo 2.5in/out (will the stock tailpipes from the Z28 work on this muffler?)What about hanger issues? And does the 95 Z28 have a bung for the 02 sensor after the cat like ours?

I know its a lot of questions but any help is much appreciated!

I'll try my best. I don't know much about old pipes. I got a used Z28 pipe with 11,000 miles on it. I bought it and a never-been-used dynomax super turbo together for $75. The pipes were brown on the outside but looked fine on the inside.

Had a shop install it. I asked if they would be a problem and they told me it was fine. I can't comment on how hard it is to install because I've never installed exhaust, but the mechanic said it was kind of a b!tch to fit. He had to cut the O2 bung and move it. It cost me $125 at meineke for the install including the pipes muffler and tips.

Look in the for sale sections of the fbody boards. Be sure to check camaroz28.com, ls1.com, fbody.com, and fbodyv6.com. Post a message stating what you are looking for and you may get lucky.

I bought a complete Z28 catback with 2k miles on it for $50. And that is down hear in TX where we don't have road salt issues to worry about so the quality was excellent. I don't think the 95 parts will have the O2 sensor after the cat, as those LT1 models were OBD1 and didn't have the 4 O2 sensor setup, only two in the manifolds. Not sure about that though. It will be nice that the pipe should have the I-pipe and s-bend sections in one piece, and should make for a cleaner install. Not sure on hanger issues either. For my system, the exhaust was from a 2k Z and needed to have a different driver's side hanger put on, the passanger side matched my stock 94 car.

In July I bought a complete catback from a 95 Z28 for $30 and put it on my 95 3.4 M5. These pipes are supoosed to be stainless. Mine are and thery are in very good condition. I can tell you for sure that there is no place to put the O2 sensor in the pipe. The system did fit on the original exhaust hangers from the 3.4. However, I think the cat for the 3.4 comes out at a slightly different place than the Z28, as the pipe hit the bearing at the center of the driveshaft near the bottom of suspension travel (I dented it a little for clearance), and it does rub on the heat shield where it goes over the axle. In addition, the opening out of the converter was considerably smaller than the pipe for the Z. Fortunately the converter flange did seat on the inner edge of the pipe flange, and I was able to drill out the flange bolt threads on the converter and use 3/8" bolt and nut to get it to seal up and hold together.

I took a good look at the pipes coming out of the muffler, because I wanted to put in an aftermarket muffler. The driver side pipe comes out of the mufller at a noticeable angle (no 90 degrees, amybe 85 or so), and I was convinced it would not work with another muffler without some bending because every after market muffler I have seen has the outlet at a 90 degeree angle to the muffler for the first few inches.

So I stuck with the stock Z28 muffler. It may not sound as good as the aftermarkets, but at least I can hear the exhaust now!

        Hope this helps.
