• Highly Effective 95-97 Ram Air Idea

I've been thinking about the intake setup on my 97 bird (SLP CAI) and while it's much better than stock, I believe this idea would be much more powerful, sound a bit better, and look sweet. Here's the idea and the stuff you'll need:

1. 1LE Intake Elbow
2. Air Filter to Fit Elbow
3. Hood Scoop with Grille
4. Money

The setup would be simple: Use the intake elbow on the throttle body, but rotate it so it points straight up and put the filter on top. Obviously this will not clear the hood, hence the point of having a hood scoop. This setup should be just as effective as a ram air hood and much cheaper. Any ideas?

probably fugly since it's near the front of the hood.

sounds like a good idear to me. your idea reminded me of an idea i had, you could have an elbow that bends down towards the ground coming out of the throttle body, there is the big gap between the engine and the front bumper area where cold air must get in when the car moves

I have been looking for a 93-97 hood I could get for dirt cheap, could even be beat up a litte, and wanted to cut a hole in it, and easily modify my homemade CAI and jsut run a 3in. peice of PVC pipein form TB, through crappy hood, and forward, maybe cut and attach a funnel to the fornt to have it Funnel air inot the motor.

Was going to be a track only mod if the track would even let me do it.

I don't have a 93-97, but here are my thoughts.

What you need is to cut a hole in the hood as suggested, but install an NACA like duct on the hood to direct air into a filter. I think this may even look kind of cool. Might look better on a Camaro than a Firebird, but whatever.

EDIT: Take a look at this to see what I'm talking about...

Note: Use one of the ducts pictured and instead put it on the hood... you may want a larger one like 3"

Well, thats what I thought too. The cold air just doesn't make it up in there. The radiator blows hot air right onto that spot. I set something up like that, didn't work well.

We're talking about the intake being functional through the hood, not through the engine compartment in front of the radiator and then below it. THe only thing that would be near the fans would be the rubber elbow which could not possibly heat the air up in that short of an intake it would be from hood to TB. I like the idea about the ducting, sounds interesting. I would really like to try this, but does anyone know how expensive it should range to have the hood cut and a scoop or air collector installed. Also, would this damage/weaken/chip the paint already on the hood, it's the original 97 paint job in nice condition though.

I WENT TO THE TRACK WITH THE SLP CAI AND MY HOME MADE RAM AIR I CAME UP WITH, IT CONSISTED OF A RUBBER ELBOW ON THE TB BENT DOWN AND I HAD SOME PVC PIPE FROM LOWES WITH A 90* BEND I THEN HAD A CUSTOM MADE BOX BENT SO THE AIR WAS SCOOPED IN, I RAN 14.7 ISH WITH THE SLP CAI AND THE NEXT RUN I RAN 14.4 ISH SO I GOT .3 REDUCTION WITH MY 8.00 RAM AIR OVER THE OVERPRICED SLP PIECE OF GARBAGE. SORRY FOR CAPTIONS :(

It's capitals. And please don't type like that, it is a huge pain to read. But good gain anyways for a make-it-yourself mod.
