  • 97 SS ram air box on 94 3.4L

I was just wondering if it is possible to buy the SS style hood and use the SS ram air box that comes on the 97 SS engine and bolt it some how onto a 3.4L?. Cause i want a SS hood but i want it to be fuctional.

The only problem with the ram air on the 3.4s is that you don't have a MAF sensor, you only have the MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor. The MAP uses the amount of vacuum in the intake manifold to assess the engine load.
If you add positive pressure (less vacuum) to the intake manifold (which a ram air would do), the MAP sensor would read that as a light load, and the PCM wouldn't react properly. When you went to full throttle, you may risk leaning the engine out way too much, and could do damage.
I don't know if the stock type SS hood could provide enough positive pressure to do damage, but you wouldn't be able to find out until the first time you stepped on it.

I mean no direspect, but I have to disagree with some of what Guardsman said. I agree the 3.4 has a MAP, and I agree that increasing the air flow will reduce the vaccuum. But I disagree how the computer will react.

With the engine running, the lowest vacuum (highest pressure)reading is at WOT, and certainly the system will richen the mixture under that condition. If the mixture was leaned out at low vacuum, it would be richened at high vacuum. High vacuum is at idle, and it doen't make sense to me to richen at idle. Am I missing something?

I have not seen under the hood of an SS ram air Camaro, but I say if you can make it fit, go for it.

I have a '93 3.4L V6 with functional ram air and have no problems with the MAP.
As far as that air box, it could be made to fit and would be pretty easy, but will take a little Home Depot work. Shouldn't be too bad though.

LTNone hit it right on the head. Your greatest vacuum reading is at idle or part throttle cruzing where your engine is most efficient. Highest vacuum will be at greatest efficiency. But that is besides the point.
