Custom 4" Cold/Ram Air Induction for 95-97 Firebirds - RULES!!!!

  • Custom 4" Cold/Ram Air Induction for 95-97 Firebirds - RULES!!!!

    Well, I decided I could waste $20-25 to try it out instead of just going on what every thinks. I've never been happier with something I've made! 4" all the way to the filter!! Instructions and parts needed are below, by the way, did I mention it makes the car fly?!?!:

    1 1LE Elbow (Makes stuff mucho easier)
    1 4" Piece of PVC Pipe (length in next post)
    1 4" PVC 90 Elbow (Not Street)
    1 4" Rubber Connector w/Clamps
    1 4" Metal Clamp
    1 Decent Air Filter

    1. Connect Elbow to throttle body and rotate so other opening is facing down.

    2. Wedge small end of bottom of elbow into pipe, clamp two together with metal clamp.

    3. Attach elbow to bottom of long PVC pipe.

    4. Attach filter to PVC pipe with rubber clamp very tightly.

    5. Cut a section out of the splash guard so you have ram air!

          Water has a very hard time going straight up through piping, which it would have to do, and in case filter gets ruined or something happens to it, I can unclamp it and add another. Also have my SLP CAI in place as a reserve for an emergency. [img]tongue.gif[/img]

            How do you get $20-$25 when the 1LE elbow costs like $50? And as in splashguard you mean the plastic piece that directs air to the radiator? You put the filter like 5 inches from the ground? I'm just trying to imagine this setup

              i'm not worried about the filter--the water going into the engine goes bad. who cares about whawt happens to the filter if it's wet--you need to look at the bigger picture--your engine.

                Well, not quite ram air, but definately a way to do the CAI. I think that if a person took something like a heater vent as a scoop in the air deflecter and ran something like a oval pipe up to behind the radiator, found a way to make the air box fit in their so air is litterally forced through the filter (ram air) and then ran it into the TB. That would be a good setup in my little mind. BUt then again, 3 years of learning to become an Engineer has really made my mind think up strange things. But I think that I might have to try that. Hell, using the factory airbox would be really cool...give me some time.

                  OK, not sure why this is so confusing, but let me explain more:

                  1. If you read the message I have the SLP CAI so I already had the 1LE Elbow, hence the fact I said you might need to get a large rubber coupling and a 90* PVC Elbow instead if you don't have one.

                  2. Water does not go though a filter and then straight up a pipe, it's too high up for the water to possible be forced that high. If you're jittery about this anyway (I have the SLP CAI so I can quickly convert to that if needed), get a piece of pipe to go to the right near the stock airbox area for a quick change during heavy rains, no biggie.

                  3. Yes, the splashguard is the plastic piece forcing air up over the radiator, I cut a 5" by 5" approx square out of it so that the filter sits in full force of the air.

                  4. The setup fits perfectly between the pipes and the radiator and the length places the filter directly level with the splash guard. The filter is about 4-5" behing the splash guard, but is level with it. Unless you manage to take a curb enough to bottom out your sway bar (cai sits right in front of it) you won't hurt the filter.

                    5. There a message from someone else on here who already tried this and said it sucked. The difference is the materials he used and what i used. He used steel pipe (which soaks heat well) and I used thick pvc (doesn't absorb heat very well) Of course it will warm up sitting in front of the fans, but not enough to heat the air for the short amount of time it's in the piping. And once again, this is not all theoretical stuff, the car is quite noticeably peppier and flys at higher speeds like never before.

                    6. If anyone would like to send me money to buy the parts, I'll assemble it for you with the exact same stuff I used at no charge and ship it to you ready to install, always willing to help out. I have enough extra PVC (had to buy a full length) to make 3 more of these. I would prefer if you all wanted to do this that I do them all at once so I don't have to make 6 trips to/from the hardware store and Home Depot, gas isn't free. ;)

                    7. Here's a diagram for anybody who still doesn't understand, and I will have pictures very soon.

                      Its really not that hard. Mine is 3inch and I made it for $20 but I had stuff lying around, didn't need an LT1 elbow or whatever. It is actually sealed off from the engine compartment with plexiglass, and protected from water from underneath. Check out pics in my website in the sig. Peace. [img]graemlins/thumbsup.gif[/img]
