I just picked up my new 97 Firebird yesterday. I am really happy with it. Its a 3.8 V6, and I am happy with the stock sound and appearance of the muffler (especially the low profile tip which doesn't extend too out).
The last V6 I had was a 94. After a lot of research and recommendations, I purchased a DynoMax muffler and took it to a custom shop to get it installed alongside with a new custom outlet/tip which was needed.
Generally speaking, I was happy with the custom work the muffler shop did. At first it bothered me a little because the pipe looked like it was extending too far out. I am really picky about this, especially with dual pipes on both sides of the muffler where one side is not level or same length with the other... I think this looks totally ****. Anyways, I went back to the muffler shop and got them to bring the pipe in a bit which they did, and I was happier with the appearance.
I was *never* happy with the sound of the Dynomax on my 3.4 V6. After being reassured it is not a raspy or loud muffler, but more of a low rumbling one, I decided to purchase it. But driving around with this new muffler on my car I was quickly annoyed at the louder raspy noise. My Firebird started sounding like a little honda when I would accelerate. I hated it so much, I didn't take pleasure in driving the car,... eventually I sold this car as I wanted to get one a little newer.
In the past when I did custom exhaust work on my 85 Trans Am, it only led to more headaches and other bull****. So now, I will never touch the exhaust again... I am going to leave it stock. In fact, I like the factory look of the stock GM exhausts for these cars and I have more satisfaction knowing the muffler pipes were designed by computer to fit the contours of this vehicle.
Personal opinion, but I have learned my lessons and I am not messing around with exhausts. Less headaches, less $$ spent, less problems.
