I don't know if any of you have heard of this, but I was watching either Spike TV or Speed Channel and saw this ad from Flowmaster warning about cheap knock-off mufflers that have been floating around the internet. They stated that all authentic flowmasters have their name stamped into the metal. If there's no stamp IT AIN'T REAL!!
FYI!

Actually, I'll give them a call this afternoon. They have an 800 number.

According to one of the Flowmansters phone reps (Scott), ALL genuine Flowmater mufflers have the name stamped in raised letters along the long weld. If the name isn't stamped into the muffler that way it's not real. he say's they have never had a run that did not have their name stamped into them.
...btw, he says that the 2.5" exhaust for our cars is Part # 17357. He recommended against anything larger than that (just to throw fuel on an old fire).

well, that explains it for me anyway. the since its only stamped on the weld side, and thats the side that is on top on our cars, we just cant see it...
i have flowmasters and when i looked it said nothing on the muffler at all, but the other day when i was having work done to my car they dropped the exhuast and it was right on the top side.

Could these "fakes" be the V-force mufflers?
A local custom truck shop owner told me that the patent expired on Flowmaster's muffler technology a couple of years ago and that another company, V-Force (I think...) purchased the designs and began to produce the mufflers themselves. From what he said, they are identical to the original Flowmasters, just cheaper, since V-Force has no $$ into the R & D.
Or then again, he may have been blowing a cloud of smoke up my arse....
