  • Catalytic Converter Question...

I'm ordering Pacesetter Headers and an SLP Loudmouth Catback, so I'll be converting my exhaust system to 3" all the way.. To eliminate the bottleneck I need a 3" in/out cat.. I've heard Random Technology is the best, so I plan to get one of those.. The question is, which one should I get? A 3" one designed for a Z28? Or just a universal 3" in/out that's 11.5 inches long (this is the only length I can find on it...). If the length is too short it shouldn't be a problem right? I can always get a mechanic to weld some extra pipe on either end or something I would assume? Is this correct?

I just need some advice on what cat to get to keep it as simple as possible and try to eliminate paying for extra work to get it to fit... Thanks.

Bigexhaust.com sells 3" 14" long (stock length) cats (magnaflow) for around $90.

Alternatively you can buy the same one on ebay for $65.

I got a carsound 94009 in my garage right now, just the cat it's self measures 12in. and all together with the extensions on it it's 16in total. The catco I use to have measures 10in for just the cat part, and 14 all in all. So I think the cat your looking at is just a tad to small, however length doesnt' really matter if it's too long, you could always trim up the pipe or give and take as needed.

Here's the old run down of the cats.

      Random Tech #616806 434 cfm
      Car Sound #93009 428 cfm
      Car Sound #94009 417 cfm
      Walker #15147 391 cfm
      Random Tech #616549 355 cfm
      Stock LS1 304 cfm
      MAC LS1 293 cfm

So if you want the best of the best the 616806 is the top, but very costly. I got the 94009 for like 80bucks shipped. Which is the best bang for the buck i've found so far.

If you do want the carsound cat, I ordered mine from http://www.exhaustproslinc.com/, it arrived at my house in less then a week. Very great company. You could probaby get them from the guy on ebay too for a little cheaper, but if you want it from a reputable company go there.

Thanks for the link.. That looks like a good deal on the Carsound.. Only saw 94009 though, not 93009.

Performance wise, how does the 94009 stack up to Random Technologies and some of the others? Was that list in order of best performance? If so, I'll probably go with that, looks like Random Technologies runs around 150 or more.. By the way, where can I find that product number you listed for Random Tech? It isn't on their site in the Chevy section and I couldn't find it with a search online (searched for the number and random technology).. What am I missing?

Thanks.. As long as I figure this out I'll be ordering everything tomorrow.. I can't wait to get it all on and see how it sounds/performs..
