As a repost - Well after track testing my car I discovered the following:

Screen installed (normal)
9.71 in the 1/8

Screen removed (suggested mod)
9.88 in the 1/8

These were consistent averages, each time I removed it, I did horribly. Each time I put it back, I did at least 0.1 better... Robert - you are a correct man on this matter

Our MAF setup is different than the LS1.. Their sensors are open, while ours are in a tunnel.

I did autotap testing and did notice a difference of MAF readings at equal RPM's. I did many test. Same #'s were produced.

I believe the MAF screen on our cars is mostly for idle. The readings will fluctuate more at low flow levels without a screen.

Also, with our MAF setup, the air goes into the tunnel, and then is channeled downard, to the bottom of the TB, and then outward again. There is little "smoothing" to be done at higher air velocities.

WHen I ported my TB however, I put the Screen back in to help my idle.

Mike Huff is not using a screen with his ported TB and his car is doing very well.

If our cars had open MAF's like the LS1, I think the results might be different... but the fact that they are in the tunnel helps.

The newer TB's.. 99+ have different maf Setups, I believe they are open. ??? If that is the case, then all of what I believe applies to the 95-98 TB models.

Also, fyi.. 96 and 98 Manual TB's are different and use different MAF sensor part #'s.. The differences are very minor. But you cannot use a 96 MAF sensor on a 98 without some modification to the MAF sensor but it may be possible to use the 98 sensor on a 96 TB.

Hey keith,
What did you mean when you said tunnel on 96-98s and open 99-ups.
My MAF is still in the throttle body, is that mean mine is tunnel? or what? I've never seen a MAF or throttle body (inside) on a 96-98s. Hmmm.

I have pics on my web page.. see how the maf is inside the TB.. its cased.. there is a hole which the air goes though. Its like a tunnel.

On my page under the reference section.

I don't believe the 99+ have this. I believe they just have it open.

If they have it open.. It gives me the idea.. to just kick that WHOLE post assembly off. Just leave the maf hanging there.. But I'm not sure how the readings would be. I bet being in the tunnel helps the readings.

I don't get it, I've heard keep in and and don't keep it in. But I've had my out for a while with no probs running n/a. I took it out because I was afraid the n20 would freeze the damn thing and then it could become brittle and fall apart. But I have that bogging down problem when I run n20, w/o a screen. Like the car surges or something. Is it possible that the n20 is spraying into the tunnel?? Is the tunel on the top or bottem of the tb?
