  • Running without MAF

I ported and polished my throttle body and my car ran slow. I thought it was the MAF so I just unplugged the MAF. And sure it was. My car ran alot faster without the MAF sensor.
Anyone know if its safe to keep running without the MAF sensor hooked up?

    ???

I swear to god.. this one is going on my top ten list for stupid posts..

yes, your car will run without the "maf" plugged in.. however i am surprised it hasent thrown a code..

Its kinda there for a reason!!

figure out whats wrong with it and plug it back in..

What's wrong is that you P&P'ed your throttle body.

The MAF is calibrated to the airflow through the throttle body. Your P&P both slightly widened the opening and smoothed the walls, so it's readings will now be lower than before for the same flow rate. This leans out the mixture in the near term.

You either need to let the engine computer recal itself (using the O2 sensor readings to richen it up a bit) or get a MAFT if the computer doesn't seem to be adjusting after a tank of gas or so.

Yea, I know I kinda messed up the throttle body.
But is it 'safe' to be running withour the MAF? It just seems like the car is running rich. I'm about to just unplug the MAF before I race until I get MAFT+ or something.

Leave the MAF plugged in. Give the computer a chance to retrain itself, you may not need a MAFT at all if it can recal itself to the new MAF readings. Leaving it unplugged will do no good.

            No, wrong.

The PCM can not re-adjust. The MAF is used during startup and WOT operation. HO2 sensors are during normal operation. (see the Technical Database for all the details of how it all works.)

You will need to get a MAFT or mini-AFC to fix this. You CAN NOT port a MAF without re-calibration, and the PCM CAN'T do it.

Gotcha. I was reading the last paragraph in the tech base when posting, and missed the open loop conditional.
