  • Loudmouth noise

Finally got myself moved and situated in MN. Also managed to get myself pulled over for various reasons (gps, fluctuation of speed or some bs). My question is, does anyone here live in the MN area and own a loudmouth? My girlfriend complains that its way too loud. My defense is that I've heard tons of civics and mitsi's in the area with fartpipes much worse than mine. So far I haven't gotten in trouble for it so I'm assuming I'm in the clear. But I see cops at just about every red light and I shift into neutral when I'm coming to a light just to sneak past em. To me the pricetag was high to purchase and install and I can't afford to invest in another exhaust at the moment. It also pops a little on revdown and I know thats against the law here. I just recently had to have the pipe welded back on after it snapped straight across. I'm guessing its from upgrading to a 3 inch pipe and it striking the car all the time on bumps. My question is, should I leave it be or start saving my pennies for another quieter exhaust such as a flowmaster or something?

i doubt that difference between the loudmouth and the flowmaster will make such a difference that cops will not be able to notice you. I live in an area where aftermarket exhaust is also monitored by the police, but i have yet to be pulled over for loud exhaust. Knock on wood.

If you want to go quieter, maybe you can think about looking into Edelbrock or something, I hear they sound nice and not as loud.

you could always swap out the resonater for a REAL muffler. alot of V8 guys make "borla-mouth's" as they call them. it'll make it alot quiter.

the loudmouth is always going to be loud. you shouldnt have any problems with it though as far as cops. as far as backfires and pops i wouldnt worry about that either.

do you upgrade the s-pipe and cat? if not that will make it more annoying loud.

i would leave it, the lm and rumbler are the best sounding exhuast imo. the rumbler is the same as the loudmouth with a diff resonator. muffler exhuast setup just dont sound good to me, ive heard magnaflow w/ headers and the flowmaster setup in person and they didnt sound anywhere near as good.

I was never really worried when I first got it. But before now I used to live up in the mountains with hillbilly's. Now I'm near the twin cities and the cops are everywhere, its so strange getting used to it. So far I only have the catback. However I do plan to upgrade the rest. My concern also extends to when I get a high flow cat and headers. I hear that it would scream with that kinda setup. I'm found of my exhaust, I like the sound, but getting in trouble with the cops is a no no. Thing is, no matter how fast your going, it sounds like your going 15 miles faster. So even though I drive fairly tame and people pass me, it sounds like I'm just short of chirping tires. Okay, sorry I'm slightly paranoid. Right now as it is, I can't remove it and exchange it, so it stays. Never heard of a "Borla-mouth", Sounds interesting though. I'll have to look that up, anyone ever heard one?

Oh yeah on a side note. Instead of starting a new thread and wasting space, I'll ask here. I never did fix that pipe striking thing. Seems no mechanic I bring it to can. But my shocks are awful soft, will replacing them with stiffer shocks take care of the problem?

I wouldn't be too worried about your exhaust. I'm sure you'll run into some cars that are a lot louder. Just wait till you get next an all bark no bite GT or V8 F-body...

when you leave the stock cat and s-pipe it, it makes the exhuast sound like you are going 15 mph faster than you are. i wouldnt worry about getting headers right awat, or at all since 2000+ have tubular manifolds that flow pretty well.

get a 3 in in/out highflow cat(50 bucks on ebay) and 3 in s-pipe(12 bucks for jegs u bend to make s-pipe). it will sound way better and get rid of that ricey drone sound that makes it sound like your going faster than you are. it will give you more of that v8 throaty sound too.

what do you mean by striking? is it hitting the ground? is your car lowered? i didnt have any probs till i lowered my car. the loudmouth does hang pretty low. shock are really going to help you. i mean you can make the rear stiffer so it does it sag as much when you hit bumps and what not but the ride will be ruffer.

i just keep the r's low when i pass cops, here in cali there is all kinds of noise makers, cops dont give a ****. buddy of mine had a cam'd, heads, blown truck, sounded like a damn drag car, cops didnt really turn there head. as a mater of fact i was pulled over in Burbank recently and the cop was talkin to me about my suspension, he liked my Z06's, sayin it looked good, that i should upgrade to the v8.
i have 3 inch, high flow cat, headers, flowmaster dual outlet. i cut the tips recently, much deeper tone, quieter by alot. i like it alot

I haven't had it lowered. It sounds like what strikes is the overaxle pipe against the underbody when I go over bumps. When the car is empty its not too bad because the body has some room to move, although not much. When its weighed down it strikes hard on every bump. I had to make my move in the firebird, so it was weighed down for 1500 miles and struck constantly. I'm assuming thats why the pipe snapped and needed to be rewelded. I tried multiple times to have it fixed but every time they try they end up saying that the pipe is too big. Does anyone have any suggestions as to cheap stiffer shocks than stock? I'm so tempted to remove the spare just to make the back a little lighter.

So getting a larger cat would help? I'll look into that.

sounds like a bad install or something not lined up right. check out the rear passenger side hanger see if you can use it to lift the exhaust up higher. when you hit bumps it could be easily hitting the panhard rod. can u get a pic of it from the rear where it goes over the axle? this isnt normall for it to do this, shocks arent your problem.

the stock y pipe is 3 inches then it goes to the cat and when it comes out to 2 1/4 inches which is a major bottle neck. so if you get the cat youll have a full 3 in exhaust. i recommend carsound/magnaflow.

That is pretty nice, once I have some cash I'll have to look into something like that. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the loudmouth, but my car sounds like hell over some of the crappy roads here. As for the hanger, its brand new. I had to go into the city right after I moved here, drove through a massive pot hole, and managed to snap the hanger in two.

So you cut/torched your tips off? And that made it sound better?

wraith - you see under your car where the stock hanger goes on the underbody prong with the tip on the end (so it doesn't slip off)? There is another prong that runs alongside it. You can either rig there with a universal hanger or even run a couple of the biggest zip ties you can find, heavy duty ones that won't melt at that distance to the pipe. My drivers side hanger is loose b/c the pass side has ALL the weight, so I rigged that side and its all good so far. I also stuck several sections of THICK sticky double side tape on the bar where the pipe goes over. Like I said, it's a rig but it works until I can get the right universal hangers.
