I don't have any 'scientific proof'-just timeslips.
My car was quicker & faster w/the cutout open (this was on my '94 3.4L Camaro). Testing conditions were the same, 3 runs were made w/the cutout closed and the car was allowed to cool off before each run. The same process was repeated with the cutout open, and better times occurred as a result. On another trip to the track, I repeated the same process, and ran a new best (16.19) with the cutout open.

i always have before and after mods times.
before the cutout i was at 15.5 at 88 mph. after the cutout i was 15.5 @ 90 mph 3 times consistently. i had asked the same question and got different reponses. but after doing it i know i was 2 mph faster without any ET change.
6s.......under the hood or under the belt, they just dont cut it.
I usually gained 1mph and a tenth or so, and my best time was w/the cutout open. I realize that 1mph and a tenth or so can be trivial to some, but to others, every little bit helps ;)
