Any fines for not having a cat?

I know in NJ it's like $2500 for each cat. I'm planning on buying an extra set of FLP cats for my headers and umm doing a "mod" to them ;)

I met a guy running offroad pipes on his V8. I asked him about that and he said if he was ever pulled over he'd tell the cop to look for them himself b/c he thinks they're on there. I'd probably just tell the cop yes they are and let him crawl on his hands and knees looking for them. Then just tell him they're somewhere between the engine and underneath of the car (where it's impossible to see w/o jacking it up and crawling under there [img]smile.gif[/img] .

Man this morning at first i was thinking the fine was $250,000 and when the cop got behind me i got really scared I was like man im done for. I misread it wrong though, 2500, which is still pretty bad if I get pulled over. The thing is it's not my intention to ride without a cat very long. It's just my old exhaust system to wrecked from rocks and crap and now I'm unsure of what kind of exhaust to put on my car. I have a dynomax and ravin chillin here but I don't know if i want to put either on? An so far I haven't heard a dynomax or ravin on a 2.5in catback. I love the way my car sounds now and I get so many compliments on it, but it's not worth riding with the fear of getting fined, and with the amount of carbon monoxide being released. So far I haven't heard a really good exhaust system I liked. And i've heard in real person the loudmouth catback, ravin, dynomax, flowmaster catback, borla. I like the B&B but it's just so much money. There has to be something else. I'm just so confused on what to do.

Not having emissions testing doesn't not mean you can't be cited for an illegal exhaust. Its a federal law which means all 50 states have to meet those requirements.

They don't check here in South Texas where I live, but you can still be busted for it. If you are worried, install a high flow 3" cat. and you won't lose that much horsepower - have a great sound, and still be legal.

In Wyoming there is no emissions testing....I have no cat, just a straight pipe, and I have been pulled over for my exhaust. The officer actually DID look under my car, and he obviously had no idea what he was looking for. He let me on my way with no citation.....WTF? Anyway, it's only a 100 dollar (maximum), "fix it ticket" minimum here. A buddy of mine got one about a month ago....no fine. We gutted his factory cat, cut the inlet and outlet off, welded the cat shell around a 2.5 inch straight pipe, and welded it up in place. Sure looks like a cat, but without the raspy "gutted cat" cough.
