Why would I need a slp or any cold air intake on a 99 firebird when I have the 2 cutouts in the nose. the air leads right to the bottom of the airbox. It's not charged or anything, but im sure it kinda works. Jessica ;)

I think you got me wrong. Isn't the factory cutouts that are in the nose, intake vents for the airbox. The only thing between them is the hoodlatch. Air should go straight to the bottom of the airbox where the intake air comes from. Am I right or wrong? Jessica

You asked(in the first post) why you'd need a SLP CAI with a Whisper lid. The whisper lid + CAI works better than just the lid by itself.

I think now you're asking is if the "nostril" part of your hood is Ram Air? It's not.

stock takes in more air than a conventional airbox..but i read somewhere that it's just more turbulent air..with the slp i think the air is forced up into the airbox...which equals jessica going faster

Those "nostril' openings between the hood and the nose of car are not cold air. They 'can' be opened up to allow more fresh air directly at the airbox. In stock form the bulhead that the upper hood latch is bolted to blocks air. Some people cut holes in both sides of that 'under hood bulk head' to allow air through.

On our year cars 'cold air induction kits' use a modidied air box (easy, easy easy) to draw air from in front of radiator. If you look under car from the front you will see the lower air deflector. That thing directs air up into the radiator when the car is moving.

You can get pretty good gains just from cutting open the bottom of air box. (as if you were going to install an aftermarket cold air) This creates a greater 'intake port' area to draw air into the air box. You will see better throttle response and the airbox will also now be ready to handle more HP if you do serious mods like cam, ported heads, SC, etc.

Ditching the stock air silencer also is a good thing to do. Changing to a smooth air bellows helps reduce the time that the incoming air takes to get to the throttle body...therfore it is 'colder' which = denser = more powerful A/F charge in the piston cylinders.

A smooth lid such as the Whisper lid is an integral part to the entire 'aftermarket airbox mod' but not the only mod.

I designed my SC to integrate with the stock air box which has cold air induction, K&N filter and custom (free) smooth air lid.

I will be cutting up the 'nostril bulkheads' this summer as well. Not so much for 'cold air' but more so to get more fresh air into the engine compartment to maybe reduce heat build up under the hood.

the SLP CAI with the whisperlid kicks @SS. the nostrils do let air in but not is NOT a CAI. With the whisper lid, K&N filter and SLP CAI you will notice a slightly better take off on accerlation and your engine will sound bader.

I'm happy with my slp cai.

The more difficult to do is to do the free ram air mod if you don't have the right tools (dremel).

I've made it with a saw, such a pain in the ***.

the slp cai is definitively a good mod over the free ram air one
