  • Black Smoke

Alright I have black smoke coming out of my stock exhaust system. All I did was change the driveshaft, put 160 degree thermostat and hypertech programming in it. What might be the problem of getting this black smoke

black/bluish smoke means oil. Check for oil leaks. Is there any oil under your car where you park?

black smoke is fuel smoke. The 160 T-stat will make it run richer, could be causing it. Oil smoke is bluish-grey, not black.

I have a question... are 160 degree thermostats just for LT1 and LS1?

Nope. Many people here have them. Opens sooner to keep your temps down, therefore giving you more HP because cooler engine = denser (more air) = more hp

I need to get one before it gets too hot. I guess it's already too late for that, though. It felt like it was 100 this weekend.

I have a question too, though. Does this happen to everyone that gets a thermostat? How do you fix it? I certainly hope you don't have to reprogram the PCM.

I know I saw one on a vendor's site a few days ago - I can't remember where. If anyone doesn't reply you might browse people's profiles or cardoman pages that have them - they may give you a link.

so how can fix my car from spitting out black smoke. Should I put the 180 thermostat back on it?

Black smoke means no new Pope has been elected. White smoke indicates a new Pope has been chosen.

Keep an eye on that tailpipe!
