i was looking at the borla catback system, and i was just wondering why one tip comes from the muffler and the other doesnt. does this hurt/better performance? thanks

no it comes with interchangeable block off plates allowing you to completely block off the muffler and just go straight out.

so that section where the tip doesnt come from the muffler is actually a cut-out?

Actually what LITTLE G said was wrong. The plates don't block off the muffler at all. They block off the passenger side outlet. The passenger side outlet does act as a cutout, as none of the exhaust gasses that exit that outlet go through a muffler. The adjustable plates/blockoff plate give you the flexibility of how much air you want to exit the cut-out. There are 4 plates. 1 blockoff plate where all of your exhaust goes through the muffler and out the driver side outlet (none through the passenger side). The 2nd plate is a 1.5" diameter size plate which allows a good amount of air out the passenger side and the rest through the muffler. Then there is a 2.5" diameter plate and a full 3" plate which is basically a complete cut-out. However, it's not hard to make your own plate as myself and other members of this board have done. I hope that clarifies some things for you.

but is it legal to have the exhaust going through the passenger side outlet, without it going through the muffler? im in California so emissions are tight

emissions wise its a non issue...mufflers muffle as far as noise regulations go thats a different story.

yup..you can have an aftermarket muffler..even one that allows exhaust gasses to flow past it like the borla system..but it has to be within a certain range of dbs..i forget what the range is..i know here they actually have something they put down by your muffler to check it..never had it done to me though
