  • installing CIA headers

How hard is it? I'll be using the lift and air power tools here at the base, so how long do you think it will take me to take off the exhaust manifold and putting the headers in?

    Any advice?

Also, will my car run correctly with open headers til I get the Y pipe bolted in and with the rest of the exhaust?

What header bolts should I use?

Can I still use the stockers(bolts) or should I use new ones?

CIA gaskets (paper ones) are they any good?

Getting the old ones out is the hardest. The heat shields were a pain too. Putting the headers in, is not too bad actually.

One of the bolt holes on the passenger side was off a little bit. I could start the bolt, but it would have cross-threaded. So I slotted the bolt hole in the header. It was the middle cylinder, but I don't remember if it was the top or the bottom bolt. Start all of them loosely and make sure they all start before you run them up.

It won't run correctly without the y-pipe. The o2 sensors will be too close to the outlet and will not read right. If you can, at least put the y-pipe onto the headers, even if it's not connected to the cat yet.

    I re-used the existing bolts.

I used the paper gaskets at the collector end, with no problem. I bought new metal gaskets for the header-to-head connection. Felpro I believe, about $15 it seems like. (I did this a year and a half ago, plus a bunch of stuff since then, so it's a little fuzzy...)

      Hey, thanks!

Is there anymore I should look out for when installing these headers?

Which side is more difficult to take the exhaust manifold off? Passenger or driver side?

I want to install these without any hassles or anything that will slow me down. I am going to pay the shop $3.50/hour to use their tools and their lift so I need use my time "wisely".

How much will make these headers amplify my exhaust sound? I have dynomax exhaust system right now.

      Thanks again...

Seems like the passenger side was a little harder to get the heat shields off.

On my '98, I had to bend one of the a/c lines. I think on the '00 you may be ok, seems like they changed over to a little different line layout, probably for the tubular manifolds. There's a pic of the a/c line under "my car" in the sig.

I don't know how much just the headers alone will change the exhaust sound. I did headers, hi-flow cat, and full 3" borla all at the same time...

What base? I was at Scott AFB for 6 years, a long time ago...
