  • Raised airbox?

I checked out some of the free mods and one of them was raising the airbox...if I could find a wrecked T/A, could I take the airbox base off and replace mine with it so it would look like it came that way stock? Would I have any problems with it bolting up or installing a whisper lid? I have the GM ram-air hood, so hood clearance isn't an issue.

The WS6 airbox hits the hood.

I sell an airbox raising kit for $15 that uses 1/2" nylon spacers which will raise the airbox without smacking the hood.

If you want one let me know.

Well, I was checking out a T/A at the dragstrip this weekend and I didn't see any reason for it to hit the hood, but I'm sure if it could be done, someone would have done it already. I just wondered if the hood clearance with my ram-air hood was enough. I may go ahead and try it, but I'll get in touch with you about that kit if it doesn't work out. Does raising the airbox make that big of a difference anyway? Any quarter mile improvement at all?

2k1bird, you'll have no problems using a WS6 airbox with your WS6 hood.

Thanks for the help, yeah I should have been a little more clear that I had the WS6 hood, I called about the part and brand new I believe it's $95 so hopefully I can find a wrecked car and get the base from it.firebirdy2k: if you can get some pics I would like to see how it looks...thanks for the info.

you would find 4 screws holding the airbox. get them out.have one of them and go to home depot, get some washers that would fit on the screw. i think a pack of 50 is only $2. take 4 washers or more depending on how high you want to go, (i used 4 because of clearance), and put the washers together using crazy glue. then get the washers and put them under the airbox bolt the screws and you would get a raised airbox.

99redcamaro: I had thought about doing that, but I was wanting to go a different route...I don't know if this is right (because I haven't raised the airbox that way), but it seems like the car would heat up alot faster since the base is lifted (heat from the engine getting sucked towards the base when it's idling or on a dyno). Plus, with the T/A lower airbox assembly, everything would look stock and it would work with my WS6 hood.

I don't think you'd have to worry too much about it heating up sooner because of the lift, it's only a quarter of an inch we're talking about here. If you can find a TA box assembly, though, I'd go with that. Like you said, it looks stock.

Yeah, I guess you're right, but still, the T/A base looks like it may be a little taller than a firebird airbox lifted a quarter of an inch...especially if anyone can do it with a stock hood. I've got alot more room than a stock hood so I figured it would make sense to not let that extra room go to waste.
