• Dynomax 3-inch catback. My honest opinion...

I gonna be as fair about this as Magnus has been about his new cam. Not even on the same level. though. :D So:

As some of you know, I have been against going to a 3 inch I-pipe. After so many difficulties in finding a 2.5 or 2.75, I decided to go with the 3-inch dynomax (3" O.D., 2.75" I.D.). Well, I finally got it put on along with a catco 2.5" cat, dynomax 2.5" in/out super-turbo muffler and hooker dual 2.5" inlet 3" outlet quad tips. Here's my honest opinion:

If torque is being lost from going to a 3 inch (and logic dictates that it should be), then it is not worth talking about. The sound is outstanding: deep and robust. No rice whatsoever. I can't wait to see what muffler break-in brings to this system. You can now tell that the engine was struggling with the restrictive exhaust. Acceleration is smooth and continuous; overall engine operation is less jerky. Sound from giving the car moderate to heavy throttle is WONDERFUL!

As far as labor, I'm sure I got bent over on this one. Let's just say it wasn't 100 bucks or less compared to everyone else. I will say that the shop did an outstanding job. They took their time and fabricated necessary pieces. They even cut the o2 bung from the old cat and welded it into my new pipe. They relocated my cat, so the two 90 degree mandrel bends I originally bought for a custom s-pipe became part of my tailpipes. I now have a 3-inch mandrel bent catback without the added curve of the s-pipe. Pipe goes straight down from the converter, makes short 90 degree bend to the left, then straight back to the pipe that goes over the axle. The part numbers I ordered are 42273 and 45593. You have to have both pipes. Shortdog273 turned me on to this, so much props to him. An interesting tidbit; after 45 miles, I still have no SES light. I'll update this post if it ever comes on.

I have to admit that I was really embarrassed by the tone of my car with the dual outlet muffler from the muffler shop. If a car revved at me, I just gave them the nod to let them know I wanted to race. Now I can rev with pride. :D

Congrats on the new exhaust Aminor. You'll have to come to one of our dallas car meets so we can check it out, or meet us in Austin. I've heard a dynomax on 1 other v6 f-bod & it sounded really nice.

AMinor, our exhaust setup is almost identical. I might get a 3" I pipe if I decide to get NOS. Anyways, I noticed you have a cutout in you sig. I'm thinking about getting one. How does it sound at idle and WOT? Did you loose any hp with it open? I heard one on a camaro rs and it sounded like a V8 at idle and when he reved it up, but I didn't get a chance to hear it at WOT. He had his installed after the cat near the rear axle. I heard it gets a annoying loudness and riceyness sound at WOT. Most people that have it say have it installed after the cat to get rid of some of that annoying loud, riceyness sound.

Sorry about how I wrote that. I meant that I cutout the other half of my lower airbox that was covered.

My thoughts exactly. If low-end was lost due to my new 3" piping I could not tell. However I could tell that the car's topend picked up greatly.

Only for ya'll would I crawl up under a car.
:D The cat was moved to the left 7 1/2 inches. It's still under the heat shield. A four inch piece of pipe was welded to the back of the cat. This four inch piece was then welded to my new pipe. Hope this helps.

The cat is not necessarily relocated. At least my high flow wasn't. Get 2 45 degree pipes from jcwhitney. They are mandrel bent also. I forgot the part no, but I got two 3" pipes for about $40. They also have 2.5" pipes.

The cat deepened the exhaust a little. The 45 degree pipes took away the restrictive S pipe. No SES light so far.

hey can you do me a favor and explain to me details on what you did? (First I don't know ANYTHING about exhaust) Explain it to me as if I were a 5yr old. I have the Dynomax muffler right now and I'm looking to do a full catback exhaust. I hate how it sounds right now when you rev (just like how you stated). How much did this all cost and what were you talking about when you said a loss of torque at the low end?
