  • "Street Legal" Hardcore Sounding Exhaust???

    Hi,
I used to have a really great exhaust system on my '94 3.4L Camaro: 3 inch High-Flow Cat, 3 inch mandrel bent pipe from the cat to the muffler, ( flowmaster ), and three inch tailpipes coming out the back. My car was literally bada**. I would get probs from anyone who would hear my car and asked me if I had a V8 under my hood. Anyway, I live in L.A where they enforce exhaust laws a lot, so I got pulled over and was given a fix ticket. So I had to remove that "Great" sounding exhaust of mine and had to go back to stock. My question is, what kind of exhaust can I get for my car without breaking the law again? I want to get a very intimitading type of exhaust system on my car, but don't want to draw too much attention from the cops.

Technically your high flow cat is breaking the law. The only way to replace a cat is to have it break and have a mechanic replace it with a stock cat. Cal laws are !@#$#% like that.

Technically, any cat that carries a CARB EO number is a legal replacement. The only time that it is "legal" to replace the cat is if it fails to operate correctly or if it is physically damaged which would lead to the first condition. Catco cats are 50 state legal and technically, I don't think that there was actually anything "illegal" about your exhaust. Just show all the CARB EO numbers that come with all your exhaust parts and as along as you pass the other visual inspections and sniffer test I think you got the shaft.

I don't know about cali, but technically if you modify your exhaust to be louder than stock, it's illegal.

Get a dynomax, it quiet enough to keep you out of trouble, and if your car has more than 50,000 miles you can replace the cat. Or if it was damaged. Luckily in my last car, a 92 camaro, my cat was damaged, so I replaced it with a dynomax cat. It sounded great and never got me in trouble. I was even pulled over for other things, they never mentioned my exhuast.

And FYI....the whole loud exhuast thing it the ricers fault. It because no one wants to hear their fart cans at 90dbs.

                WRONG.

                Read above post.

                C.A.R.B. laws are...50-state legal...means its Federal...means California is included.
