  • Nostrils cut-out road test

A while back, I opened the nostrils of my Firebird to create a ram air - type set up. Recently, I went on a road trip and had a chance to unscientifically test the car with the cut out nostrils and "without" the cut out nostrils (I have block off plates). Here is what I found:

Under moderate to heavy acceleration using the functional nostrils, the car definitely pulls noticeably harder / stronger in the 50-65 mph range and upwards from there.

When I put the block off plates back in, the 50-60 MPH "pull" was missing. Above 60 MPH, the car responded similarly to what I saw in the 50-60 range without the block off plates.

Under near-to full WOT, the effect was noticeable even more.

Moving from 65-90 was noticeably easier/quicker without the block off plates.

I did not do comparisons above 90.

Unscientific conclusion: Yes, the nostril cut out does help above 50MPH.

The KN filter is accumulating dirt more rapidly (no surprise there). I've found a few dragonflies in the airbox.
I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

Isn't it great, thats a very good description on how it feels, its to bad niether of us make track runs or have a gtech. anyhoo, when I finish my improved design I will post pics and a how too.

I don't want to reveal my new design, because I don't want anyone to finish it before I do, and I move real slow. But think maximum air flow. ;)

I don't have any decent pics. I think Pewterbird has some good ones. Do a search using the word nostrils in this forum.

Pewterbird, I added aluminum plates to block off the open cavities in the interior of the nostrils (ie, less turbulence has to be good).

I'm still experimenting with blocking off the side interior cavities.

BTW, the raised airbox deal goes hand in hand with the cut out nostrils.

The extra pull feeling gives you about 0.1sec. That's what I found with the FTRA

I also have the cutout and put aliminum plates to creat 2 ducts for each nostril. I agree with the unscientific results!

As for keeping the crap out or the K&N, I just spent $1 at the local hardware store and got a piece of aluminum screen. (I have pics if you want.) Four metal screws and a 4" by 6" (or whatever size) screen for each duct.

Since I am Buffalo, I also made (2) acrylic pieces to block off the duct if I have to drive my car in the ice and snow for an extended period of time.
