ok. It seems I have a few options here.

    1) use a dynomax muffler. Which one is everybody referring to?

    2) use dynomax bullet muffler inline with i-pipe and/or get resonated tips since I am happy with the sound and just want to quiet it. Which would be most effective, the tips or the bullet in the i-pipe? How much of a difference would it make?

    3) try stock muffler from a z28/formula. Does anybody know how this would work? Would it be a lot quieter?

What seems to be the best choice? The goals are:
    1) make the exhaust quieter
    2) retain performance as much as possible
    3) retain the sound, or at least not make it sound bad.

    Not necessarily in that order.

well, I had the dynomax bullet installed inline with the i-pipe and I couldn't be happier with the results. It didn't change the sound at all as far as I can tell. The volume didn't change at all I don't think when accelerating, and very little at idle. When I started the car I didn't think it made any difference at all.

However, when cruising the exhaust is much much quieter. I can listen to my radio at a tolerable level, or have a conversation in the car without difficulty. I now hear more wind and road noise when cruising than I do exhaust, and before I couldn't hear any of that over the exhaust growl.

Thanks for the advice everybody, and especially Dominic for the bullet suggestion.
