Looking for something a little more quiet....

I currently have the edelbrock cat back and I like it a lot, but I think I now want something a little quieter. I don't want to give up much in the way of performance though. I have a 3" i-pipe, 3" s-pipe, and 3" catco. I was thinking of replacing the edelbrock muffler that's on there with the stock muffler from a z28 or a formula. Something like this...

Is the stock z28/formula exhaust still pretty quiet? Anyone have a sound clip? I don't want to go to a Y87 exhaust because I don't like the turn-downs in the back. Also, would this negatively impact my performance much? I have read here that just the muffler has minimal impact on performance so I am hoping that it won't.

I did some searching but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for any help.

I know this is off-topic (sorry) but can you tell me what type of mods had to be done to get it to fit on a newer model? (since it only lists as a fit through '97) ... Thanks, wish I had an answer on a quieter muffler for ya.

I thought Edelbrock was quiet too...going by the clip I heard and comments on the web. Until recently. ALthough I've heard it quietens down some once it burns in.

I don't know about it being a quiet muffler. Maybe compared to some things, but it has some volume to it. My wife can hear my car enter the neighborhood several streets away from inside the house and I have had a number of people comment on how loud it is at work. I like the sound, it's deep and never ricey at any rpm. I am just looking for something that is a little quieter, especially at the low rpms.

the only difference between the exhaust for the earlier model years and the 98+ models was the exhaust hangers. Nothing a decent exhaust shop can't handle. My hangers were relocated and everything fits up perfectly.

If anything I think it gets louder as it burns in. When I first got it I didn't notice it much at cruising speeds. Now it is much louder, but also deeper and a little more growly. I've had it on the car for about 15k miles.

Is dynomax pretty quiet? How does it compare to the stock exhaust? or to the stock z28/formula exhaust I mention in my original post?

Add a bullet resonator in the I pipe towards the rear of the piping, and/or swap to resonated exhaust tips... This should kill a great deal of the sound. [img]graemlins/thumbsup.gif[/img] Don't loose the sound!

hmmm...I hadn't considered this. I just did some searching on it and it might work out. Thanks for the suggestion.

I checked out some places and the bullet muffler comes in a lot of sizes. I am assuming I would want to go with the 3" in/out, but what length. Is longer better? Any reccomendations on where to buy one.

How much is this likely to quiet the sound? People who have done this, how drastic was the change?

i have a flopro muffler on ym car and it's pretty damn quiet, but it's also got a nice deep tone to it. even when i get after it, the tone doesn't get ricey, just stays nice and deep compared to a flowmaster or something like that. but i'm on the other end of the spectrum, i want it louder.
