  • My cat is bad already?

When i bought that bird, June 2001, the cat was prolly the shinyest peice under the car.. and only 17k miles later its clogged? Is there something that can cause this? I didnt much modding.. look in my sig, thats all i have.. Is it possiable to just have a faulty cat conv?

I have to replace that along with my clutch.. what are the dimensions of the stock cat, imma get a catco, but dont want any problems fitting it.

how many miles it got on it? I have the same year camaro and I had to replace my cat not to long ago so it could be bad, but if is new or even fairly new cat, I don't know.

Could be. Mine has gone out twice. Just think about what it does. If you're running rich, it works twice as hard. A high-flow from a decent manufacturer is probably going to last you longer anyway. Just think of it as a mod.

Okay time for me to ask a dumbassness question... but How do you know your catalytic converter is on its way out?

I mean I am experiencing a loss of power but I have no idea where it's from... I got new wires and plugs in January but exhaust is stock except the mufflerback borla...

I was getting rattles out of it. If you smack it, you can tell.

My CAT lasted me only 35K miles. Just had mine replaced under warranty. I just have a whisper lid, SLP ram air deal and a muffler off a WS-6.

I don't want to sound stupid, but what does catalyst smell like? Does it have kindof a "gas" smell to it?

Depending on the gas a good cat an smell like rotten eggs sometimes. The only real way to tell a bad cat is if it has a _lot_ of loose stuff rattling inside. That can reduce flow. If you think you have a bad cat, it's best to take it to a pro to find out for sure.

That rattling that everyone is hearing could either be the metal breaking down inside or it could be simply the heat shield loosening up. If this is the case then either take it off with a hammer and a big screwdriver or buy 2 hose clamps big enough to go around it and tighten those up. Next, a bad cat will probably smell like sulfur (rotten eggs) but not always. Also a clogged cat can result in loss of power. If it is not taken care of it will get to the point where the car won't start. If you're having problems and your sure its the cat then take it to a shop that way it can be mig welded and you don't have to worry about a clamp seal leaking.
