Need quiter muffler, need some help here.

K, I've been searching for a quiter muffler for a few days now. Reason is, I got my 2nd loud exhaust ticket the other night. [img]graemlins/twak.gif[/img] I currently have CIA headers, high flow cat, and the American Thunder 3" system on my Camaro. I'm looking for a muffler that will replace my flowmaster muffler but will work with all the current exhaust pipes. I did a search on post about quite mufflers, and it seems that the Dynomax Turbo Muffler would probably be the way to go. Will this muffler hook up into my current exhaust system? From the post I read it seems that it sounds good. Quite down low and it gets tone to it as you speed up. Or is there any other mufflers you all would recommend using with my current setup? I called flowmaster and they said they didn't have any other mufflers that would fit into the American Thunder system. I'm looking for something that has 3" in and dual 3" out if all possible.

Are the Edelbrocks quiter than the flowmaster 80 series? I was thinking about going back to the Dynomax Ultra Flo muffler. I had one of them before I got the American Thunder catback system. I'm just wondering how it will sound with the 3" exhaust from the catback system. I'm wondering if it will be loud also. The reason I'm looking more toward the Dynomax Ultra Flo than the Dynomax Super Turbo Muffler is because I don't think the Super Turbos have two outlets like the Ultra Flo does. Also, I need to find some sound files of different mufflers to see how they sound. [img]smile.gif[/img]

Welp, I think I'm going to go with the Edelbrock. I've been searching and reading post for the last 2 hours. [img]graemlins/popcorn.gif[/img] From what I've read, they are kinda quite down at idle and low RPMs. I'm just hoping it's quiter than my flowmasters American Thunder muffler. I'm also hoping the Edelbrock muffler will hook right into the American Thunder catback setup. I do know the outs on the Edelbrock are 2.5" and the Flowmaster is 3". I just hope the mufflers are the same size and everything fits nice and perfect. Kinda doubt it, but I can hope for the best. [img]smile.gif[/img] I'll let you all know if it fits without added exhaust work.

Jeff, they are loud when you get on it, but are much quieter when cruising or with normal driving. BUT at NO point should it be as loud as your flowmaster. When you get it on, report back in the forum or even just e-mail me. I have been trying to see how people like the Edelbrock, since I have it and like it, and since not many people have heard it. Jeff, the Edelbrock muffler part number is 5509. That looks to be the only one made for the Camaro. Don't worry about the 2.5" out. It will NOT hurt your performance.

yeap, I have the part number already. [img]smile.gif[/img] Dynomax also makes two mufflers for the Camaro. But, I'm going to go with the Edelbrock since it seems like the people that have them seem to really like them. I know the sound of a dynomax and the sound of the flowmaster. Guess it's time to hear the sound of a Edelbrock. [img]smile.gif[/img] I listened to a sound clip of a LT1 with the Edelbrock and it sounded great. Better than about any V8 exhaust I've heard. Should sound pretty good on my car. [img]graemlins/rock.gif[/img]

Just an idea, but u could prolly save a lot of money if you were to have a Bullit muffler put on your I-pipe

Don't know what laws in VA are like, but in NJ they have to measure your exhaust before legally issuing a ticket. Our law basically states that exhaust can't excede 95 db from 100' away when you are cruising between 55 and 65 mph.

My friend has a Loudmouth on his '93 Trans Am, which is louder then my old 2.8 was when I ran it through open manifolds. His car is still legal. If your state is similar to this, I can't imagine that your exhaust is illegal.

No person shall drive and no owner of a motor vehicle shall permit or allow the operation of any vehicle on a highway unless it is equipped with an exhaust system of a type installed as standard factory equipment, or comparable to that designed for use on the particular vehicle as standard factory equipment, in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise. An exhaust system shall not be deemed to prevent excessive or unusual noise if it permits the escape of noise in excess of that permitted by the standard factory equipment exhaust system of private passenger motor vehicles or trucks of standard make.

The term "exhaust system," as used in this section, means all the parts of a motor vehicle through which the exhaust passes after leaving the engine block.

Chambered pipes are not an effective muffling device to prevent excessive or unusual noise.

Basicly if it's louder then stock, it's illegal.

Yeap, Nic hit it right on the dot. In VA, you are not suppost to touch really anything on you car from my understanding. You can change some stuff but not much. Your car is suppost to remain stock. A lot of cops will let you pass by, but my exhaust is pretty loud, so I've got two tickets in the last 5 months. Plus I hardly drive my car. I only dive my car on the weekends. From what I've read about the Edelbrock, I should be ok for the loudness of my exhaust. I never had any problems when I had my Dynomax with cops pulling me over.

Ahh....well that sux.

SLP helps the Jersey guys who buy thier Loudmouth kit by sending a letter with the kit. It explains the exhaust system that is on the car, and how it is intended to be a muffling device. Most ppl in Jersey that I have talked to say this has gotten them through inspection.
