Anyone with a 99+ have their MAF ported and have pics of it? or have experience problems. Yes I know the 98 and under models experienced problems but that doesn't concern me =)

Yes, I've "ported" the throttle body, for lack of a better term.
Basically, all I did was clean it up with a Dremel tool.
Basically, I got rid of the ledge where the MAF screen used to sit, and got rid of the sharp edge in the groove where the lock ring sat. Then, I cleaned up the area in front of the butterfly. When the throttle body was made, it was cast, and then machined from the rear.
When they machined it, they didn't clean up the sharp edges. So, I smoothed those edges out. Also, the step where the MAF sensor sits was also cut off by the machining and left, so I ground that down.
I also got the sharp edges off of the butterfly, and cut the butterfly screws down, so they didn't stick out from the rod that the butterfly slips into (I can't remember the name for the rod right now).
However, big warning here, don't change the diameter of the butterfly, or where the butterfly seats in the throttlebody. The MAF sensor is calibrated based on the diameter of that. If you make it larger, it will flow different, and your MAF sensor will be off.
As to the effects, it's the best of both worlds (MAF screen in and out). It got rid of the rough idle (which I suspected was being caused by turbulence from the ledge that held the MAF screen, and it looks like I was right), and I got a lot of low end torque back, but I also get the top end and throttle response that you get with the screen out.
I think that the airflow going into the front opening on the MAF sensor is not as important as the airflow going past the opening on the bottom. The sensor works by taking air in the front, which is pulled through by creating suction at the bottom hole. With the MAF screen out, the ledge that held the screen in is causing turbulence in the airflow, which in is in turn causing the amount of suction (vacuum) at the bottom of the MAF sensor to vary, which in turn varies the amount of air flow into the front of the sensor. (That's my $.02 on the issue).Wife and a dog, they both think they\'re Kujo.

1999 3.8 A4 Y87
Navy Blue Metallic
BFG G-Force KDWS 275/40/17s,
WS6 Wheels (17x9)
Phoenix Transmissions 2400 Stall Converter
FRA, Holley Powershot filter, Whisper Lid, Ported Throttlebody
2000 manifolds, Flowmaster, WS6 Tail Pipes,
MSD 8.5mm Wires, MSD Coils, Autolite plugs
Performance Cryogenics treated rotors
1LE Sway Bars and panhard rod, 1LE front springs w/SLP Bilsteins, stock rear springs w/ 3rd Gen Bilsteins, BMR STB, KBDD SFCs, 1LE rear lower control arms, 1LE front lower control arms
1968 Chevelle Malibu 327 TH350

I was gonna buy John D's 99+ maf and cut off the black plastic post on the bottom. Even with recalibration from the MAFT, will that still mess up my airflow characteristics and MAF calibration??
I figure at the worst it will be a $60 dollar mistake. If it does work, I think I will be the first one to do it.

The ledge made that much of a difference? I never thought that it would mess it up that much.
what kind of bit did u use on it? did you port to match the gasket on the entrance to the upper manifold? did u try to polish it a little to flow more?2001 Arctic White Firebird
More mods than I\'m allowed to list!

Yeah, the ledge made that much of a difference....I just used the bits that came with the dremel kit :D . Next time, I'm going to get some better bits, but the regular ones worked fine.
I didn't need to match the gasket, they actually did that pretty well, for a change.Wife and a dog, they both think they\'re Kujo.

1999 3.8 A4 Y87
Navy Blue Metallic
BFG G-Force KDWS 275/40/17s,
WS6 Wheels (17x9)
Phoenix Transmissions 2400 Stall Converter
FRA, Holley Powershot filter, Whisper Lid, Ported Throttlebody
2000 manifolds, Flowmaster, WS6 Tail Pipes,
MSD 8.5mm Wires, MSD Coils, Autolite plugs
Performance Cryogenics treated rotors
1LE Sway Bars and panhard rod, 1LE front springs w/SLP Bilsteins, stock rear springs w/ 3rd Gen Bilsteins, BMR STB, KBDD SFCs, 1LE rear lower control arms, 1LE front lower control arms
1968 Chevelle Malibu 327 TH350

New Maf sensors cost more than 60 bux I'm fairly sure of that. Personally I wouldn't mess w/ it.Keith - 99 'maro - White M5 - bumpstick and boltons - 13.65 @ 101 N/A

I can get one from John D. for about 60 bucks shipped. I figured it would be worth a try unless someone else has already done it and had terible results.1999 red camaro v6 M5: with a turbo
13.52@107.99
No, seriously: Who Farted?
http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/600086

I am not worried about the availability of a new MAF. I can get one easily.
I am asking if anyone has ever chopped up a stock 99+ MAF to improve its flow characteristics.1999 red camaro v6 M5: with a turbo
13.52@107.99
No, seriously: Who Farted?
http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/600086

I am gonna go ahead and buy a spare MAF. I will hack up the one I have and take pictures of it if it works right.
Wish me luck.1999 red camaro v6 M5: with a turbo
13.52@107.99
No, seriously: Who Farted?
http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/600086
