  • EGR leaking? (help please)

Im so stumped i need any ideas or opinions. Today i installed GM stock gaskets on my pacesetter's once finished i took it off the ramps and started it up and now the leak seems even louder. Now i dont know if the gasket is not lined up or since i moved the header it moved the EGR connection. I am pretty sure what the EGR is but what part could be leaking? Im stumped and i have given up on my search for the leak. Any help would be great... If anybody has a pic of how they connected the EGR to there driver side header please show me.

I had horrible luck with the EGR on my Pacesetters. It seems most others had the same problems. I took it down today and had the hole in the header welded closed for good. That'll fix the leak. ;)

yea but i guess you dont have to worry about emissions in florida, i do. Im up for inspection in about a month and this leaking has been around for say 3 or 4 months and im tired of it. I just want to run my car off a cliff. Like what part of the EGR could be leaking? right where it connects to the header? Cuz the guy that did my install said he had to bend the EGR down to connect to the header?!?! Did anybody else have to do this??

The problem is that there's only 1 bolt on the bottom of that connection to hold it on. It's probably leaking out of the top. If you can get some good material, you can make a gasket that should stop it. I tried some gasket paper to seal it at first. That worked pretty good until the paper burned away.

Go to your local parts store... buy some ultra copper.

then go home.. tkae off the EGR.. smother the header in ultra copper..and retorque the egr down to the header.. see how that seals up..

i used a blockoff plate that i ordered.. forgot the site i got it from.

for my gasket i took a sheet of heavy duty aluminum foil and folded it.. making a 3ply aluminum gasket.. well.. it has never leaked yet. aluminum is a lot better of a gasket than paper

Ultra copper is the way to go....i used some vice grips to help crimp down the side without the bolt for a day till it dried.

well i used ultra copper today on the EGR but i havent started my car since 1 pm to let the stuff dry overnite and all. So hopefully this is part of my leak, if not then its back to the gasket and not being lined up. Keep ya posted

Ultra Copper the snot out of it. tighten the bolt, and then put a clamp on the top part of it and let it dry.

well today was the day..i started up the car after putting ultra copper on the EGR and what do you know.......it still leaks. I guess the only thing right now is the new GM gasket i put on isnt lined up correctly...so i guess when its not 0 degrees here im going to have to go and line that up. To much trouble, i just want to drive my car and hear nothing but the back end of my exhaust and my music...no ticking no leaks no nothing!!!

I hear ya. After trying with no luck to get a broken stud out of the drivers side of my block, I had to put the headers on and take it to an exhaust shop to try and get it the stud out.
After removing the header and successfully removing the stud we found out that the paper gasket had ripped and needed to find some new ones, without any luck we had to make a set which leaked like a mofo and needed to be replaced.
I purchased some Fel-Pro ones and added some ultra copper to both sides of the header. It might have worked if I would have been able to line up the holes with out ruining my beads of copper. Now after alot of work and money it still leaks, alittle less than before but their is still a faint ticking.
What a pain in the ARSE!

Are you sure its the EGR....my pacesetters came with some y pipe bolts that were too long and I had to add some washers to seal up the joint. Make sure that its not coming from there...should hear a leak from under the car at idle.

Yea i have tried on the y pipe several times to see if there was a leak or not. Initially i thought it was the y pipe was leaking so i got washers and all the mess to see if it stopped the leak..this time i couldnt get under my car to well to tighten them enough. Its to cold right now to work on anything so im gonna have to wait a few days before i can do anything..which sucks, cause it sounds like crap
