  • Broken Header bolt . . . how to remove?

Okay, as luck would have it, I finally got my headers installed and was tightening down the last bolt when UGH! it snapped off.

I snapped off the front-most bolt on the passenger side, and it's pretty well recessed. I can't seem to get a drill in there to help work it out.

Anyone know a good answer to this riddle. I'm a little depressed about it.

Off the top of my head I can't think of anything. It would help if I could see it...but I can't.
If I think of anything I'll post it up.
      Good luck man, that blows.

tap and die sets tend to be more compact... try using one of those. it'll take a while but it's worth a shot for a stripped bolt.

And the worst that can happen if I leave it in there? - warped headers and exhaust leak. -- me thinks bad idea.

I'm trying to figure out if I can slap some quick steel on the end and turn it out after everything hardens together.

you might try a right angle drill attachment. or a smaller drill. you are going to need to drill a hole in the bolt bit remaining in the hole. the use a bolt extractor (it looks a bit like a screw with the threads going the wrong way so that when you place it in the hole you just drilled and turn it with a drill counterclockwise it will dig in and hopefully turn the bolt.)

the hard part is drilling a hole in the bolt bit that still in the head.

if the bolt is sticking out enough you might try slotting it so you could go at it with a screwdriver.

It's not sticking out at all. (grrrr)

I'm going to hit Sears tomorrow and see if I can find something (that right-angled thingy was also mentioned by someone else).

Hey how far are you from Tyson's Corner? (not far? come stair at the car with us tomorrow! :D )

Why are all these people breaking header bolts....20 ft-lbs is all you need...the only way to break a bolt is to really get on it...just tighten them till they are snug.

Because it seems no V6 header kits include new bolts, so people re-use the old ones instead of getting a new set from Advance for $30. Bolts that have been sitting in an engine block for six years will break with almost no force applied at all.

You are a ****ing moron. If you can't think of something intelligent to say in the TECH FORUMS, shut the **** up and don't say anything at all.
