Is my year firebird (1998 a4) ok to remove the Throttlebody screen? If so what gains/differences can I expect, and if no why can't I remove it. I heard something that your not supposed to for a '98 but I'd like to hear some more opinions/feedback and fianlly can I put it back on if I want to some day. If anyone has done this on a 98 please let me know.

you're not going to get any noticable gains from removing your screen. In fact, you may down the road regret removing it. That screen is there for a purpose, to catch anything that manages to sneak it's way past the filter. Chances of this happening are pretty slim, but I've heard of a few people finding grass on their screens. You probably won't have anything to worry about UNTIL you remove the screen. Screen = used to create a laminar air flow across the MAF sensor.
I have had varied success removing mine on a 2000 and a 2002. For the 2000 it worked fine, no drawbacks. For the 2002 the fuel economy went downhill very quickly by doing this so I put the screen back in.
You're not going to gain much removing it - I don't recommend it anymore.2002 5-spd NBM Camaro

I have a 97 and removed mine for a track day. I picked up 2 one-hundredths on my next pass, and the 4 after that were all slower than with it in... my results my be inconclusive, but it certainly didn't buy me anything.

Alright, if you go to http://www.fasttoys.net/9398fbodyinduc.html and look a little down the page at the SLP 85mm High Flow MAF, it refers to the screen as "air straighteners." So I believe that's all it's there for. It doesn't have anything to do with it being a "backup" screen for the air filter.
This subject has really been talked to death with absolutely no conclusions. You have to make your own decision on whether or not to remove it.
I removed mine and didn't really notice any gains but I'm just too lazy to worry about putting it back in. Didn't seem to make a difference either way. I thought i'd never take mine out in my car's lifetime. I had custom ram air and with it I had a couple of problems with the filter sitting right in the box and between the hood. A lot of stuff got past it and got stuck in my MAF. Since then i've converted to custom cold air induction. (No i don't have any problems with it) After cleaning out my tb I lost the MAF screen somewhere in my garage. I said the heck with it and left it out. I don't know if it's a cross between new spark plugs, a clean tb, and no MAF but the car has significantly picked up it's response. I've noticed in the top end it seems to really pick up more then it use to. Again the MAF screen might not be playing a role in this but it's benefiting me a little. How my pipe sits it was diging into the MAF before and now it can sit inside the TB with the coupler. It seems to be alright. And I have no complaints. If you do decide to take it out please do not try to cut it out. It's a very thick screen and most people don't notice but it's just held in by a retainer ring that you can pop out with a screwdriver. Take it out for a day and see if you notice any changes.
