you need some backpressure so for a v6 i'd say its recommended AFTER the cat.. even though some may disagree, this is what i would do at least.

before the cat will be the loudest and give you the best performance gains on the track.
if you just want your a little louder and just want to say you have a cut out to sound cool then put it after the cat ,after the mufflewrs for all it matters.

Don't listen to him.
Putting the cutout before the cat will be a lot louder, and will give a bit more high-end power, but in doing so, you will lose all low-end torque, which is what Tim Haynes can't seem to understand is necessary to have on a V6 (on a V8, a cutout before the cat would be more low-end friendly due to more backpressure). The high-end gains that you will get from putting it before the cat won't be enough to makeup for all the lose low-end torque. Putting it after the cat on the middle of your i-pipe, or possibly on your over-axle section is the ideal place. It won't be quite as loud as before the cat, but the performance is better. Personally, I'd rather sacrifice a little sound for the better performance.

What if you put it somewhere close to after the Cat? Still loose backpressure at that point?

It'll definitely be louder then your flows. I ordered a FlowTech cutout last Thursday... hopefully I'll get it in in the next 2 days or so.
Anywhere after the cat will be about the same. Basically you have to put the cutout on your i-pipe or over-axle section if you put it after the cat. Putting it on the s-pipe would have the cutout facing the driver-side of the car, and I believe could blow hot exhaust fumes on your fuel lines (not 100% sure, but it's a possibility), so I'd just mount it on the i-pipe, right after the s, tilted towards the side of the car.
well Jc's is like 20$ and you can open it from inside your car..personally I think the best way to do it (right) would be to put it right before the muffler then instead of just having the Y-pipe let fumes out next to your gas tank.. put another Y pipe at the end of your muffler and connect it with the cutout...

Everyone who's ever owned the JC Whitney cutout that I've heard from says it sucks. Don't bother with it.
If you want a 2.25" cutout, which is the stock size of our pipes, check out http://www.quicktimeperformance.com . They sell FlowTech's, I ordered mine from them. They don't have online ordering though, you gotta call, no biggie though. They also sell the 2.5" and 3" ones. If you want online ordering and don't want a 2.25", then I'd get it from Thunder Racing. Their service kicks a$$. I ordered my brakes from them, and ordered them ground, heh, they shipped them out the very day I ordered them, and I got them the next day.
So my truck is finally getting some work done, after 17 years, Oil pressure sensor went out and it’s located under the lower intake manifold. Have to...
