anyone came up with a cheap way to make your own CAI on the angled-TB pre-97 cars?

I'll give you a short and sweet answer:
Don't bother. It's a waste of time. You'll get better results with the real deal. For the '95-'97 3.8, get the SLP CAI. You can probably find a used one for cheap (what I did). If not they're usually about $170 new from www.slponline.com-James

\'96 3.8L A4 Camaro (SOLD)

I beg to differ, mine is almost complete, works very well and cost me less than 10 dollars. It is 3inch all the way and not crimped. I'll keep you all post as I am making a guide for building it. Right now its just an intake, it sucks in air where the old box was, not down in the hole like the SLP CAI, but I feel the difference.1997 Chevrolet Camaro v6 - 13.8@104MPH

racerj why would you say something like that when you dont have solid proof? I hate when people say dont do this, just because i said so  FYI i tested your overpriced slp cai verse me and my buddies homemade ram air and i ran atleast a consistent .3 quicker in the 1/4 with the ram air the slp cai only was worth .1 and all my runs were VERY close because my car is extremely consistent. now stick that in your fife and smoke it :D

I was talking to defrag last nite and told him my setup. Mine also gave me a minimum of .3 in the 1/4. My proofs are my observations. And one of the things I've seen consistently is that results on homemades haven't ever really stacked up against the real deal. A long while back there was post that compared results of a bunch of people who went from homemades to "real" CAIs. Everyone found the "real" CAIs to be better. One of those results was accompanied by a comprehensive summary. I don't remember if this was on this board, or before its existence on CZ28, but in either case it pretty much laid the matter out as it was.
If you think the SLP is expensive then you can get one for a more reasonable price if you buy it used, as I did.
Your car-against-car testing isn't worth much because the cars won't be the same. Even from factory some cars are better than others which are (read: should be) the "same". (Thanks to fantastic quality control...) So, you have to test product-against-product on the same car.
Lastly - Do you know what a fife is? Because it's not for smoking. -James

\'96 3.8L A4 Camaro (SOLD)

yes i know what a fife is, i wasnt sure if i spelled it right but it was just a joke i heard on the simpsons. when i said i tested the slp cai verse my ram air i was talking about on the same car and same day at the track. with slp cai i ran 14.7s 3 times i then installed the ram air and ran 14.4s 3 more times. that is proof enough for me
